Marvel Studios’ “The Marvels” took in $21.5 million on Friday, which included $6.6 million in previews, and has resulted in the film’s weekend opening estimates now coming in at $47-52 million.
That’s the second-lowest opening day (behind “The Incredible Hulk”) and the lowest-ever weekend debut estimate for a film in Disney‘s Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Not helping is that the film landed a B CinemaScore from audiences – on par with “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “Eternals”.
The soft audience reception follows on from a mixed critical reception with a 62% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics. Audience ratings on the same site have it at a better 85%.
That’s not all though as the film’s estimated global opening, which was at $140 million the other day, is now being lowered to $110-115 million through Sunday – the lowest start ever for a Disney MCU title worldwide.
Overseas markets are seeing underwhelming results just like the domestic ones with hopes for s $80 million haul internationally now reduced to $60 million.
The result is being seen as a major misfire at the least, and a disaster in other areas. How much lower the $220 million-budgeted film can go? We’re about to find out.
