Veteran TV journalist Liz Hayes has revealed she continues to be stalked by a man who first began contacting her while she was a host on Today between 1986 to 1996.
She said her experience was a factor is her decision to join 60 Minutes as a correspondent, a role she’s held since 1996.
Appearing in an interview with fellow reporter Tara Brown on Sunday night, Hayes, 67, said she is “still” stalked by the man.
During Sunday night’s episode, Brown asks her: “Let’s talk about that for a second. How long did he stalk you for?” To which Hayes says: “Still”.
“What they do is rob you of your sense of safety,” said Hayes.
“That’s how it is, and that robe of life that I hate having taken.”
Hayes said she wanted to transition from a daily breakfast show to a weekly program in order to “stop being so visible”.
Speaking about the decision, she said: “By now I have someone who’s pursuing me”.
“This will sound wrong, but I did decide that it was time for me to stop being on television everyday,” she added.
The Sydney journalist also wrote about the experience in her upcoming memoir I’m Liz Hayes.
She said being stalked resulted in security guards attending outside broadcasts and even to her residence. The stalker also once visited her parents, and Hayes once even received a call from a private detective who had been employed by the stalker to find her.
“The joy drained from my life and it would take years before I regained the confidence to move about safely,” wrote Hayes.
“I try not to think about it anymore so I can get on with my life, but in truth it’s still not the same.”
Hayes first joined Channel 9 as a news reader in 1981 as a reporter. She also hosts the Channel 9 current affairs program, Under Investigation.
