A popular US comedian has been slammed for a racist joke about Aboriginal people at an Australian show.
Andrew Schulz has just wrapped up his Aussie ‘The Life Tour’ but one joke at his Sydney show on November 18 particularly irked some of his fans.
Schulz, in reference to the Israel-Palestine protests taking place every weekend, joked white Australians would be yelling “Give them back their land”.
But it’s what he said next that has been described as “textbook racism” by fans.
“Aboriginals on the grass would be like ‘WTF? Give who back their land?’,” he continued.
“We don’t even want the land, we want you to increase Centrelink, just increase Centrelink.
Schulz then made a remark referencing a harmful stereotype about petrol.
The clip, which has been viewed 1.6 million times with over 2000 comments on Schulz’ TikTok, has been lambasted for entrenching racist stereotypes.
“This joke isn’t funny, it is just racist,” one person wrote. “He knows his Australian audience very well and panders to their bullsh*t. Easy money for him, nothing genius in it.”
“Sigh, you had me in the first half, then you had to go full stereotypically racist. Do better,” wrote another.
“Sniffing fuel and Centrelink what a hilarious and original joke that definitely hasn’t been made 1000 times,” a third wrote sarcastically.
Aboriginal Australians also expressed their dismay.
“It started off funny but so unimpressed that it ended once again with a racist demoralising stereotype of our people,” one wrote.
“That’s pretty sad bro, you are just perpetuating the same narrative for the colonials to further subjugate my people for a quick laugh,” wrote another.
But some of his supporters defended the controversial comedian.
“Saw his show in Melbourne last week and it was the funniest thing I’ve experienced, he is world class,” wrote one.
