James Corden’s TV ‘upgrade’ named - news.com.au

Late night talk shows are getting a major shake up in 2024, with CBS announcing the new host who is replacing James Corden and The Late Late Show on the network.

After months of searching for the next late night star, CBS named comedian Taylor Tomlinson as the new host of After Midnight, which will air after The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

She will be the only female late-night host in the US and the youngest late-night host by more than 20 years to the male-dominated field.

Late-night veteran Colbert announced After Midnight and Tomlinson as its new host on his own talk show to raucous applause.

“Thank you guys for clapping,” Tomlinson said.

“That would’ve been so embarrassing if we ‘focus grouped’ it and they (the audience) were like … ‘ehh’.”

Fans and fellow stars shared well wishes and praise for Tomlinson as the news spread online.

Fellow late night host Jimmy Fallon commented on her Instagram post about the news, writing: “Congratulations! You’re gonna be great.”

“Why I am kind of crying right now?! I’m so happy for a person I’ve never met but know absolutely deserves this,” one of Tomlinson’s fans wrote.

“Taylor is hysterical – she‘s going to absolutely crush this gig,” another wrote.

“You mean I get to watch Taylor on TV 5 nights a week????? Consider me sold.”

“A woman!!! The heavens opened!”

Some fans even dubbed the appointment an “upgrade” from James Corden, who announced earlier this year he would be quitting the Late Late Show and returning to the UK with his family.

It came, but was unrelated, to his fall from grace after a number of allegations about the Briton’s unpleasant behaviour on-set and in public levelled by celebs, former co-stars, and members of the public.

Most infamously, Corden was accused of being “abusive” toward servers at New York City restaurant Balthazar by the establishment’s owner Keith McNally. The men later apologised to one another.

“I’m so glad you’re going to do this, I’m such a huge fan,” Colbert told Tomlinson after bringing her to the stage.

The 30-year-old has gained acclaim through her two Netflix stand-up specials – Quarter Life Crisis and Look at You, which are among the most popular on the streaming platform – and sold-out international tours.

Tomlinson told him she was most excited to have a “real job” after more than a decade doing stand-up.

“I’ve never had a real job. I’ve been doing stand-up since I was 16, which is not a real job,” she said.

But it appears she was genuinely shocked to get the job, producers at The Late Show took a snap of her stunned face in the Zoom call with Colbert after she learned she got the gig.

“I thought they were calling to let me down easy, so I wasn’t sure it was going to happen,” she told the audience.

She joins the likes of Jimmy Fallon and Seth Myers on NBC, Jimmy Kimmel at ABC, and fills the slot left by British expat James Corden on The Late Late Show earlier this year – in a show that will, reportedly, cost “significantly less to produce” than The Late Late Show, according to Variety.

And despite being the youngest host of a US late-night program, CBS executives felt Tomlinson was established enough, would be generous with guests, and had a “poise and competence beyond her years”, Variety reports.

In 2021, Tomlinson was named in Forbes’ annual 30 Under 30 list. In 2015, she was a finalist on NBC’s Last Comic Standing. And Variety deemed her one of the top 10 comics to watch after her appearance at the Just for Laughs festival in 2019.

Tomlinson has also gained huge popularity on social media, with 2.6 million followers on TikTok and another 1.5 million on Instagram.

She had a message for the people who might not know her, telling the audience at Colbert: “I’m 29 so if you don’t know who I am, don’t worry. I barely know myself.”

Colbert joked she was “more than an entire Taylor Tomlinson younger” than he is at age 59. She said she would turn 30 days later, and Colbert replied: “Happy birthday, I got you a network show”.

After Midnight will be based on Comedy Central‘s @midnightWith Chris Hardwick, which aired from 2013-2017 and which featured a panel of comics.

Tomlinson is one of a handful of female talents to take the helm of comedy television programs, with new talent hard to come by or hard-pressed to find success in the dwindling format.

The most recent was YouTuber-turned-presenter Lilly Singh, who replaced Carson Daly on NBC from 2019 to 2021, when the show was taken off air.
