In an emotional blow we didn’t see coming, The Bachelorette’s Brooke was forced to cancel the night. James Weir recaps.
The Bachelorette producers punish us on Wednesday night with a cutesy date (we won’t be writing about it) and an obstacle course (refer to previous aside) before treating us with a messy confrontation that leads to a self-eviction.
It’s totally relatable. We’d also like to evict ourselves from this series but, like all toxic relationships, we refuse to walk away because we’ve invested too much.
JAMES WEIR RECAPS: Read all the recaps here
You wanna hear a story about a girl named Carissa? Get comfortable. Carissa is a nice but nervous young lady who’s eager to please. But sometimes eagerness just isn’t enough.
Last week, during some one-on-one time with Brooke, the two girls kissed and it was a dud pash. The thing is, Carissa doesn’t know it was bad. Brooke had to run away and complain about it to us in private.
“I feel … confused,” she cringed. “Because I felt this really strong connection with her at the start. I just really didn’t feel that in the kiss.”
A week has gone by and Carissa is beside herself. She hasn’t heard from Brooke in days. Mainly because that’s just how this show works, but she doesn’t seem to realise that. She’s inconsolable.
“I feel a little uncertain about my connection with Brooke,” she confides in us, between short, sharp breaths. “I haven’t spoken to her in over a week. And I’m not sure my connection with Brooke will be able to develop in this situation. I don’t even know where we stand anymore.”
There’s only one reasonable thing for her to do: Trudge across the back lawn and confront Brooke at the cocktail party.
“Heyyyy,” she trips into the living room where Brooke’s having an intimate chat with Darvid.
“I don’t wanna be so forceful tonight but there’s just something I reallllly wanna talk to you about.”
“So I really wanna steal you.”
Carissa drags Brooke away into a private nook and lets all her concerns unravel.
“Sooo … I think love is such a beautiful thing,” she begins. “And when I first met you on the red carpet, feeling that instant spark …” She trails off on a series of unfinished thoughts. “And when we had that extra time, I really enjoyed our conversation. The next morning, seeing you go on a single date and hearing these intense connections that people are forming with you – (they’re) just so powerful. I just don’t know if I can do this. I just can’t fall in love this way. I can’t do it like this.”
With all of this being thrown at her without warning, Brooke remains the unwavering pillar of strength and graciously lets Carissa go. She’s pragmatic but kind. Empathetic but realistic. It’s how I wish all my past HR representatives chose to part ways with me.
“Hearing Carissa say all this, it just makes me sad,” Brooke says, breaking down afterwards.
And once the tears are dry, it’s back to business. “I honestly thought we had something special. And it’s got me thinking: if I can be so off about Carissa, who else am I misreading?”
Brooke storms out to the backyard like a mum who has just come home to find a party’s going on without her permission.
“So, I’ve just put Carissa in a car and she’s just gone home,” a stern Brooke tells the gathered girls and boys. “She’s just told me she can’t fall in love in this environment. So I’m a little bit upset by it.”
Brooke puts an end to the night’s celebrations and cancels the rose ceremony. Partly because she can’t deal with it, emotionally. But mainly because producers didn’t schedule for two people to leave tonight.
