Adele fans have been noticing her obsession with Saturn — from a tattoo to chunky earrings. This is the real meaning behind them.
Adele has been blowing up our feeds since she dropped her new album, 30, and with good reason — the album is a banger and it should be listened to, especially if you’re on the way to interview the Queen herself.
If you’ve been following the hype, you may have noticed that Adele really seems to be favouring Saturn, yes, the planet.
At her TV concert and special, Adele: One Night Only (you know, the one with all the famous people and that adorable proposal), the singer was flashing a Saturn tattoo, sporting Saturn earrings and just so happened to hold her special at LA’s Griffith Observatory. Then, there are her social media posts, like this one, also referencing the ringed planet:
So is it all connected? Yep. It’s an astrology thing — specifically, a “Saturn Return” thing.
For non-astrology nerds out there, A Saturn Return is when Saturn fully rotates around the sun to return to the very same position it was in when you were born. This full rotation marks the beginning of a new cycle in your life, or so they say.
Most people will have one close to the start of their 30s, and they’re meant to signal maturity, change and a larger vision of yourself and your desires — so your 30s seems like a perfect time for it.
How do we know this is what Adele has been referring to? In a recent interview with Vogue, she spoke her high levels of anxiety, and specifically showed her Saturn tattoo while speaking about her Saturn return.
“Then I hit my Saturn return. It’s where I lost the plot,” she said. “When that comes, it can rock your life. It shakes you up a bit: Who am I? What do I want to do? What makes me truly happy?”
The period that rocked the singer’s life seems to have included her divorce from Simon Konecki, which she references a lot on the new album.
“I was just going through the motions and I wasn’t happy,” Adele said. “Neither of us did anything wrong. Neither of us hurt each other or anything like that. It was just: I want my son to see me really love, and be loved. It’s really important to me.”
I think it’s safe to say that Adele’s Saturn Return ultimately worked out pretty well for her, so naturally the first thing I wanted to do was work out when mine was.

Looks like I’ll be waiting another solid 30 years for a new life cycle, but this time I’ll be ready for it.
