An Aussie household name AND a Grammy-winning international music superstar have been revealed on The Masked Singer.
WARNING: Spoilers below.
Two more celebrities were revealed in Sunday night’s episode of The Masked Singer – a bona-fide international music superster, and aone-night-only guest who left one of the show’s judges very red faced.
Yep, that was radio stalwart Kyle Sandilands inside a Paw Patrol costume singing a surprisingly tuneful rendition of Train’s Drops of Jupiter - and somehow, his on-air partner of more than 20 years didn’t guess it was him from her position on the judging panel.
“This is the worst you can get, I’m never living this down... this is so embarrassing,” panellist Jackie O said after Kyle took off his mask.
The embarrassment should be shared, though - as Sandilands pointed out, he knows every single member of the judging panel, and none of them picked it was him (their guesses included Russell Crowe, Anthony LaPaglia and Guy Pearce).
But Jackie O couldn’t quite believe she’d been fooled so easily.
“When you were singing, there was a flash of you in my mind, but then I was like, ‘No.’ You never even let on once. We work together every morning, I‘ve been telling you about Masked Singer every day. All the while, you knew you were gonna be on it!”
Later in the episode, contestant Atlantis was unveiled as none other thant US soul singer Macy Gray, best-known for her global smash hit I Try.
Gray has one of the most instantly recognisable voices in music history, so it was slightly surreal to hear the judges’ guesses after her rendition of the Elle King song Exes and Ohs. From the very first note, it was instantly recognisable as Macy - but the judges guessed Delta Goodrem, Rihanna and... Noni Hazelhurst?
It’s no wonder the Grammy-winner looked slightly confused after her unmasking:
“I knew it when I heard your voice! I said, ‘That‘s Macy Gray!’ said judge Urzila Carlson, whose final guess was Delta Goodrem.
Last week, singer Mahalia Barnes, rugby league legend Loti Tukiri and Australian singer-songwriter Ben Lee were unmasked as contestants. Before that, MasterChef judge George Calombaris was the second celeb to be revealed.
Before that, British film star Vinnie Jones providing a genuine surprise to viewers when he was the first celeb revealed this season.
Jones was all smiles on screen – but gave a less enthusiastic appraisal of the show during an interview with Kyle and Jackie O the next day, telling them he signed up for the “big cheque” and that he found the top-secret filming procedures annoying.
“You know what, as soon as the cheque clears, then the big stick comes out and they start whacking you on the arse with it. They started bossing me around,” he said of his behind-the-scenes experience.
“I wanted to give a few of them a little slap, but every time I wanted to do that, they put a cape over my head and I couldn’t see anyone.”
