When are the Emmys on? Here's how to watch and who's nominated - ABC News

After another year where many of us used COVID-19 as an excuse to stay home and watch TV, there'll be more discerning eyes than usual watching the Emmy Awards this Monday.

We'll be seeing The Crown go up against The Mandalorian and The Handmaid's Tale for best drama series, while breakouts Hacks and Ted Lasso vie for best comedy.

Here's when they're on, how to watch, and who'll be vying for television's top prizes.

When is the Emmys? How can I watch?

The 73rd Primetime Emmys ceremony is being broadcast from Los Angeles at 10:00am AEST on Monday, September 20.

Unlike last year's Emmy Awards, which was virtual, some guests will be attending a scaled-back ceremony in person, and the red carpet will kick off two hours ahead of the main event.

You'll be able to watch the ceremony live on Fox Arena, but if public broadcasting's more your speed, the ABC will be blogging the entire thing.

Who's hosting the Emmys this year?

Viewers across the world will be hoping Cedric the Entertainer lives up to his name, as he takes on his first gig hosting the event.

It follows talk show host and Emmys veteran Jimmy Kimmel being in charge last year, and the event going hostless the year before.

Speaking ahead of the show, Cedric told the New York Times he's going to switch things up, and doesn't want an "Oscars feel" to proceedings.

Who else will be attending?

The Emmys have teased dozens of special guests will be playing some role in proceedings, including:

  • Stephen Colbert
  • Dolly Parton
  • Seth Rogen
  • Sarah Paulson
  • Amy Poehler
  • Patrick Stewart
  • Dan Levy
  • Eugene Levy
  • Rita Wilson
  • Catherine Zeta-Jones
  • LL Cool J
  • Michael Douglas

One notable exception from the guest list will be Jennifer Aniston, who has said she won't attend due to concerns about COVID-19.

Who's got the most nominations?

In terms of major nominations, Apple TV+'s Ted Lasso is the breakout success of the past year. Its first year has generated serious buzz that led to 13 major nominations and 20 overall.

Mainstays of prestige TV The Handmaid's Tale and The Crown each have 11 major nominations, while the film version of Hamilton, WandaVision and Mare of Easttown are all contenders for several awards, too.

Netflix's limited series The Queens Gambit is up for six major awards, having already swept the Creative Arts Emmys to pick up nine trophies.

Here's the full list of categories to be awarded on the night:
