Ella Hooper has been revealed as Baby on The Masked Singer.
Hooper was the singer-songwriter of ARIA-winning band Killing Heidi, alongside her brother Jesse. Killing Heidi hit the big time when it was discovered on Triple J’s Unearthed.
Its hugely popular song, “Weir”, was an immediate earworm on its release in 1999, reaching a high of sixth on the charts while “Mascara” topped the charts.
Hooper was also a team captain on the short-lived revival series of Spicks & Specks on the ABC.
Before her unmasking, Baby sang Backstreet Boys’ “As Long As You Love Me”, which prompted The Masked Singers’ celebrity panellists to take a stab at her real identity.
Dannii Minogue was the only one to correctly guess it was Hooper in the costume.
Jackie O thought Baby was Lauren Conrad while Urzila Carlson had ventured Ruby Rose. And Dave Hughes thought it might’ve been Tones and I.
Hooper said of her adventure, “Well, every year or two, I make sure I do something totally out of my wheelhouse and this is pretty out there.”
She also said it had been hard to keep the secret from her brother.
“I’ve come up with some weird excuses. And he also has a beautiful little baby girl who looks like Baby. So shout out, Zoe. It’s been hard not telling him.”
Last night, The Masked Singer revealed the famous face and vocal chords underneath the Lightning get-up as Alli Simpson.
Simpson is the sister of singer and swimmer Cody Simpson, who won the first season of The Masked Singer Australia.
The panellists weren’t even close in guessing the identity of Simpson, who has also been involved in I’m A Celebrity and Filthy Rich and Homeless. They all admitted to being embarrassed. Jackie O said, “Oh, what a twist, I would never have thought.”
Simpson smugly declared, “I had you all fooled”.
The panellists’ incorrect guesses for Lightning were Maddie Ziegler from Jackie O, Tones and I from Urzila Carlson, Angie Kent from Dannii Minogue and Sally Pearson from Dave Hughes.
It comes after a massive Sunday night episode of the show, which saw US soul singer Macy Gray and Aussie shock jock Kyle Sandilands unmasked. Sandilands’ one-episode stint as a character from Paw Patrol was especially shocking for judge Jackie O, given the pair have been on-air radio partners for more than 20 years.
“This is the worst you can get, I’m never living this down … this is so embarrassing,” she said after Kyle took off his mask.
“When you were singing, there was a flash of you in my mind, but then I was like, ‘No.’ You never even let on once. We work together every morning, I‘ve been telling you about Masked Singer every day. All the while, you knew you were gonna be on it!”
Last week, singer Mahalia Barnes, rugby league legend Loti Tuqiri and Australian singer-songwriter Ben Lee were unmasked as contestants. Before that, MasterChef judge George Calombaris was the second celeb to be revealed.
British film star Vinnie Jones provided a genuine surprise to viewers when he was the first celeb revealed this season.
