Nicole Richie's hair catches fire during birthday celebration | news.com.au — Australia's leading news site - NEWS.com.au

Shocking footage posted to social media shows Nicole Richie going up in flames while celebrating her 40th birthday.

Nicole Richie’s 40th birthday almost ended in tragedy after the star got a little too close to her cake amid the revelry.

The TV star and jewellery designer shared the dramatic moment her hair caught fire as she bent down to blow out her candles, appearing to laugh until she realised the alarmingly close call.

Beneath the footage of her screaming as a friend reached out to extinguish the blaze that had leapt up her curls, Richie definitely saw the humour in the moment.

“Well … so far 40 is (fire emoji),” she wrote.

In the comments, husband Joel Madden took the opportunity to drop an iconic line from Nicole’s The Simple Life days, quoting co-star Paris Hilton with: “That’s hot.”

Richie’s other celebrity pals chimed in with their concern over the near-disaster, with Kelly Rowland writing: “My heart just dropped!!!!”

Olivia Munn commented, “Holy s**t.”

While brother-in-law Benji Madden encouraged his sister-in-law to “stay lit,” posting, “Happy Birthday Sis love you and thankful for you always.”

Aside from nearly burning her hair off, the mother-of-two rung in her 40th with a number of heartfelt messages from family on social media.

“Happy Birthday Nicole. You’ve made love feel timeless I’ve forgotten how old we are,” wrote her husband of 10 years.

Model Sofia Richie said she’s “so lucky” to call Nicole her “big sis,” writing on Instagram, “I love you beyond words.”

While Richie became a household name from her time on reality TV, the House of Harlow designer told ET she has her reservations about whether or not she’d allow her children to follow in her footsteps.

She concluded that depending on the project, she’d be open to it.

“I think one of my favourite things about The Simple Life and one of my favourite things about doing it was, it really took us out of our everyday lives and put us in somebody else’s world,” she said.

“So I was always able to maintain a level of privacy and able to have my own life.

“I think it would be a different thing going into it now, it just depends on what it is,” Richie — who shares daughter Harlow, 13, and son Sparrow, 11, with Madden — added.

“But if my kids said to me, ‘I want to try this new thing that hasn’t been done before.’ You just say … Well, obviously now they’re preteen, so I’m going to say no. But yeah, if they’re 18 and they want to go do whatever it is, as long as it feels good and authentic to them, I’m fine with it.”
