A US judge has ended the conservatorship that has controlled pop star Britney Spears's life and money since 2008.
Key points:
- Earlier this year, Spears told a court she felt abused and exploited by the arrangement
- Today's decision means the singer will again be in control of her financial and personal affairs
- Fans outside the court cheered and sang when they heard decision
"Effective today, the conservatorship of the person and estate of Britney Jean Spears is hereby terminated," Judge Brenda Penny said after a hearing.
She added that the current conservator would continue working to settle ongoing financial issues in the case.
The decision means the singer will again be in control of her financial and personal affairs, which until recently were managed by her father.
Earlier this year, the court heard emotional testimony from the singer, who said she felt abused and exploited by the arrangement.
Spears did not attend Friday's hearing in Los Angeles.
Fans outside the court cheered as the decision was announced and began singing her hit Stronger.
The conservatorship was set up and until recently overseen by the singer's father after she had a breakdown and underwent treatment for undisclosed mental health issues.
After revealing her years of anguish, Spears received a groundswell of public support and the singer hired a new lawyer who moved aggressively to end the restrictions.
In June, she told a court she wanted her "life back" as soon as possible.
Interest in the case grew in the past year amid documentaries about it and the rise of the #FreeBritney movement.
Fans questioned why the singer lived under restrictions while successfully touring around the world and earning millions of dollars.
