Backlash to Matt Doran’s new Adele tweet - NEWS.com.au

As angry Adele fans slam Seven’s Matt Doran on social media, the other Matt Doran has found himself in the crossfire.

It’s not been a great 24 hours to be an Australian TV journalist named Matt Doran.

The Daily Telegraph reported yesterday that Seven’s Weekend Sunrise host Matt Doran had blown Australia’s only TV interview with Adele, travelling to London for a half-hour sit-down with the singer only to admit he hadn’t listened to her new album.

Cue social media outrage – some of it directed at the other Matt Doran, who works as a political reporter on the ABC. As angry tweets started to flood in, The Other Doran had a little fun with the attention, quoting Adele’s latest single …

The joke flew over more than a few heads:

To be clear, Seven’s Matt Doran is at left, and the ABC’s Matt Doran is on the right:

The Matt Doran responsible for this Adele controversy has copped his fair share of criticism, though. Hundreds have flocked to his most recent Instagram post – a selfie with two Seven crew members in London on November 4, teasing a “pretty special” story he was working on – to mock the TV host for the huge blunder.

The Daily Telegraph reported that Adele was offended by Doran’s admission he hadn’t listened to her new album 30, and her record company exercised their right to can the interview, leaving Seven with no footage from an interview that was organised as part of a reported $1 million deal which included local rights to air the singer’s One Night Only concert special.

Doran last night defended himself in an interview with The Australian, claiming it was an unfortunate mistake, rather than arrogance, that meant he didn’t listen to Adele’s new music before the interview.

He said he had been sent an e-copy of the new album but “somehow missed” it while flying to London. He called it “the most important email I have ever missed,” and said he was “mortified and unequivocally apologetic.”

“When I sat down to interview Adele, I was totally unaware that I’d been emailed a preview of her unreleased album,” Doran said.

He also refuted reports he was suspended by Seven over the incident, telling The Australian’s Nick Tabakoff he was never “formally” suspended despite being off the air for one weekend.
