The dialect coach on the upcoming movie House of Gucci has trashed the film’s star, Lady Gaga, for her attempt at an Italian accent.
The dialogue coach on Ridley Scott’s much-anticipatedHouse of Guccifilm has brazenly admitted that Lady Gaga didn’t nail her character’s Italian accent in the film.
“I feel bad saying this, but her accent is not exactly an Italian accent, it sounds more Russian,” Italian actress and dialect coach Francesca De Martini told The Daily Beast of Gaga’s vocal impression of Patrizia Reggiani, who famously hired a hit man to murder her ex-husband, Maurizio Gucci, in 1995.
De Martini herself had auditioned for multiple roles in the film, only to be rejected as an actress, but was called back to help coach Gaga’s co-star, US actress Salma Hayek.
“What happened was this: Salma shot for one day and then asked for a dialogue coach,” De Martini told the publication. “I think she heard the accent wasn’t right and she was worried – she wanted to do well.”
While listening closely to Hayek, 55, De Martini also listened closely to Gaga, and realised her take on Reggiani was a bit more Eastern European than Italian.
Gaga, 35, for her part, certainly put a lot of effort into finalising her take on Reggiani.
“I lived as her [Reggiani] for a year and a half. And I spoke with an accent for nine months of that,” including off-camera, Gaga told British Vogue this month. “I never broke. I stayed with her.”
She even changed her hair colour in a bid to get the accent right.
“It was nearly impossible for me to speak in the accent as a blonde,” she added. “I instantly had to dye my hair.”
The film, however, does feature a wide array of accents, with some actors doing a more realistic take than others.
“When you see the trailer, there are so many different accents,” De Martini noted, adding that Al Pacino’s is more New York-Italian, while Adam Driver barely has any at all.
The movie is set to hit theatres in the US on November 24, but won’t arrive in Australian theatres until January 1.
Despite De Martini’s opinion, Gaga is already attracting Oscars buzz for her portrayal of Reggiani, which is only her second ever feature film.
Her debut was in 2018’s A Star is Born, of which she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress.
