The private London clinic that treated Kate Middleton earlier this year is reportedly being investigated over a possible delay in reporting an alleged security breach.
Earlier this week, it emerged that three people were being examined following disturbing allegations that an attempt was made to access the private medical records of the Princess of Wales at exclusive Marylebone hospital, The London Clinic.
According to the UK’s Telegraph, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) requires organisations to alert them of data security breaches within 72 hours of discovery.
The London Clinic reportedly did not contact the ICO until more than a week after Kate was discharged on January 29, following her 13-day stay.
An ICO source confirmed to The Guardian that the “timeliness of reporting” was included in the investigation.
It follows confirmation on Wednesday that British police have been “asked to look” into the claims, which centre on Kate’s abdominal surgery treatment.
The three people all work at the world-renowned facility – which is the preferred hospital for many royals, including King Charles.
It is a criminal offence for any healthcare staff to access the medical records of a patient without consent of the organisation’s data controller.
The hospital has said that if any breach of patient information is found, “disciplinary steps will be taken”.
Its chief executive, Al Russell, also declared there was “no place at our hospital for those who intentionally breach the trust of any of our patients or colleagues.”
Meanwhile, the alleged breach has been described as “incredibly damaging” for the Clinic.
“This is a major security breach and incredibly damaging for the hospital, given its unblemished reputation for treating members of the royal family,” an insider told The Mirror.
“Senior hospital bosses contacted Kensington Palace immediately after the incident was brought to their attention.
“They assured the palace there would be a full investigation.”
The new drama comes as Prince William and Kate find themselves at the centre of an unprecedented social media storm, driven by conspiracies about her health and condition.
The couple is said to be “shaken” by the frenzied speculation, which includes unsubstantiated claims about their marriage.
In what’s been viewed by many as an informal bid to quash the rumours, William and Kate made a surprise appearance at their “favourite” farm shop in Windsor last weekend.
Footage of the outing, exclusively obtained by entertainment website TMZ and The Sun, was then published, showing the couple carrying shopping as they strolled through the car park.
While some conspiracies have persisted, including that a doppelganger was used during the shopping excursion, a source close to the Wales claims they believe they may have now regained a measure of control around the situation.
The insider pointed out that Kate’s decision to break cover in public was “the right move, because ultimately she is fine and she needed that to be seen” – but admitted some people would never be convinced.
“There’s nothing you can do these days about a bunch of headbangers who have a vested interest in keeping the conspiracies going,” the royal friend said.
“They will keep saying Catherine is a fake.”

Kate is expected to return to official duties at some point in the coming weeks, with Kensington Palace simply stating it would be “at least” after Easter in its initial statement in January.
It’s since been clarified by insiders that the suggested timeline actually referred to the UK Easter holiday break, which ends mid-April, as opposed to the actual Easter weekend on March 31.
Kate’s last official appearance was on Christmas Day.
