“I do occasionally experiment with editing,” a rare statement from the Princess of Wales said after the first official post-surgery photo of her was pulled by the world’s biggest picture agencies over concerns it had been “manipulated”.
The strange situation has taken the internet by storm.
While many royal watchers believe the edited image is reason for concern given Kate’s absence from the public eye following her abdominal operation in January, other social media users are making light of the unexpected controversy with viral memes.

The famous meme of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia character Charlie Kelly’s conspiratorial rant has re-emerged to illustrate people’s growing suspicions.
“I wasn’t a**ed about Kate Middleton before but that picture has given more questions than answers. I need to know!!” one X user wrote.
“Me wondering; when this was taken? why a (bad) photoshop job was need on Charlotte’s left cuff/wrist? what’s Louis doing with his fingers? why Kate’s not wearing a wedding ring?” another captioned the meme.
“Me a week ago: ‘I don’t care at all about the Royal family, it’s none of my business.’ Me now trying to figure out this Kate Middleton photoshop madness,” another wrote.
Messi, the dog star from Anatomy of a Fall, who got his own seat at the Oscars on Monday, has even been dragged into the mess.
“This is easily more believable than Kate Middleton,” wrote one X user alongside a clip of Messi ‘clapping’ at the ceremony, which has been viewed more than a million times.

The picture of Kate and her children edited to show a sad worker dressed as an Oompa Loompa in the Princess’ place has been liked by more than 50,000 people.
“The original photo WITHOUT photoshop has been unearthed by the international press,” the creator joked.
The photo of Kate and her three children, George, Charlotte and Louis, has done the opposite of quelling conspiracy theories surrounding the future Queen’s whereabouts and wellbeing.
After a two-month disappearance from the public eye, Kate was seen for the first time since her January operation last week.
She was in the passenger seat as her mum Carole drove her near Windsor Castle.
The last time the Princess was seen in public was Christmas Day, December 25 last year, when she and husband Prince William took their three children to a church service.
The portrait released this week, which was taken by William, marked the first time the Princess of Wales had spoken out publicly since her “planned” major abdominal operation in January.
“Thank you for your kind wishes and continued support over the last two months. Wishing everyone a Happy Mother’s Day,” Kate wrote in the caption of the photo, which was also shared to the couple’s official Instagram account. There it remains.
After multiple photo agencies withdrew it from circulation on Monday, Kate released an unexpected statement overnight taking responsibility for the confusion.
“Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing,” she said.
