SBS’ extreme reality series Alone Australia returned for a second season this week – with a couple of key adjustments.
The show, which sees 10 survivalist contestants dropped in the freezing wilderness in a quest to be the last person standing, has had a change of location for season two.
While last year’s batch were dropped in the remote wilderness of south-west Tasmania, this season they’re stranded in the equally rugged forests of New Zealand’s South Island.
However, they have one key advantage over their season one counterparts: They’re allowed to hunt with a bow and arrow.
That’s happy news for the show’s youngest contestant, 27-year-old Chace, a Defence Force Combat Engineer and hunting enthusiast, as grisly photos shown on screen during episode one demonstrate.
“I am absolutely stoked that I can use a bow on this season,” Chace says during the episode (the change is due to New Zealand’s more relaxed hunting laws compared to Australia).
“I’ve literally been hunting my whole life. I go hunting at least once a month. It’s what I do for fun. If you miss you don’t eat … and I never miss.
“I’ve hunted with rifles, bow an arrow, spears, boomerangs and even just a knife at times. I’m not out there being a killer … I’m out there being a hunter.”
But as those who watched season one will remember, contestants who put too much faith in their hunting abilities can sometimes suffer in the game – spending all day wasting their energy looking for a deer or rabbit that simply doesn’t exist in their area of bush, at the expense of honing other survival techniques.
Last year, rewilding facilitator Gina Chick emerged victorious as Alone Australia’s first winner, lasting an incredible 67 days in the Tasmanian wilderness after she focused her attentions on building a warm, sturdy shelter and on catching eels and harvesting other reliable food sources.

By comparison, hunting guide Peter lasted just three days, calling it quits after he struggled to find any animals in the bush he could kill and eat.
We’ll have to keep watching to learn which of those contestants Chace ends up more closely resembling.
Alone Australia airs 7:30pm Wednesdays on SBS.
