The royal family have been dealt another scathing blow after the head of one of the world’s biggest photo agencies likened information sent out by the Palace to North Korean propaganda.
In a blistering new interview, Phil Chetwynd, global news director of AFP said the Palace will no longer be considered “trusted source” of information after it released a manipulated picture of Kate Middleton and her three children on Mother’s Day.
Such a label has only ever been previously attached to North Korea and Iranian news agencies.
“It’s a big deal for an agency to issue a kill [notice],” he said. “To kill something on the basis of manipulation … [we do it] once a year maybe, I hope less. The previous kills we’ve had have been from the North Korean news agency or the Iranian news agency.”
It’s actually not even very well photoshopped,” Chetwynd said. “[There were] clearly a lot of problems with the photo, so it shouldn’t have been validated. I think as soon as it was, all the photo editors at all the major agencies immediately saw there was a problem and got together and spoke about it and [said] ‘what do we do?’”
Chetwynd went on to confess that the agency has urged the Palace to release the unedited version of the picture, but their calls had been ignored.
Asked if he thought it would be helpful for Kensington Palace to release the original image so that the extent of the edits could be made clear, Chetwynd said: “That’s what we asked for.” “Before we killed the photo, we all sent a message saying: ‘Could you give us the originals? Could you, you know, have a reply?’ We didn’t get a reply, so that’s why we killed the photo.”
Chetwynd said trust in the Palace appeared to be slowly disappearing among the public.
“You cannot be distorting reality for the public,” he said. “There’s a question of trust.”
The Princess of Wales is currently recovering from abdominal surgery which she received in January.
Palace officials say she will return to public duties at Easter at the earliest and said there would be not update on her health until there was “significant new information to share”.
