Denmark’s Australian-born Princess Mary has shared a cryptic Christmas message months after rampant tabloid rumours about an alleged affair between Prince Frederik and a Mexican socialite.
In a new letter posted on her flagship Mary Foundation website, the future Queen consort of Denmark reflected on the past year and mused that “time is a peculiar quantity”.
“We need each other if we want to succeed,” the 51-year-old Crown Princess wrote.
“And this does not only apply to working life and to those of us who work to combat social isolation.
“It applies to all of us. People need people.”
The mysterious message comes just months after Frederik was accused by a Spanish gossip magazine of engaging in an illicit affair with a socialite in Madrid.
In late October, the magazine published photos of Frederik on a night out in Spain with the aptly-named Mexican socialite Genoveva Casanova while Mary remained back at the palace in Denmark.
In the photos, which were published by Spanish magazine Lecturas, the two were seen enjoying a day and evening together and even explored a Picasso exhibition.
The pair were also photographed during a cozy walk through a park in Madrid, before getting into a change of clothes and heading out again for dinner after which they returned to Ms Casanova’s apartment.
Frederik, 55, was photographed leaving Ms Casanova’s apartment the following day.
The allegations rocked the usually scandal-free Danish royal family and cast an unfortunate cloud over Mary and Frederik ahead of their upcoming 20th wedding anniversary in 2024.
However, the couple have not publicly addressed the rumours and are currently visiting Mary’s native Australia and neighbouring New Zealand for the Christmas holidays with their four children.
Mary also appeared to send a subliminal signal to the press by noticeably wearing a delicate necklace with the letter “F” around her neck just days after the photos of Frederik with Ms Casanova hit the tabloids.
The affair rumours made the press around the same time another bombshell allegation was made about Spain’s Queen Letizia, who allegedly engaged in an affair with her own sister’s ex-husband after her marriage to King Felipe.
Letizia and Felipe are close friends of Mary and Frederik, with Felipe serving as godfather to the Danish royals’ youngest son Prince Vincent.
Felipe was also present on the fateful night in 2000 when Frederik first locked eyes with Tasmanian-born Mary at the Slip Inn pub in Sydney.
