Aussie show tops Netflix list - news.com.au

Viewers spent more than 40 million hours watching Celeste Barber’s Wellmania according to new never-before-seen data about the top movies and TV shows on Netflix.

For the first time on Tuesday, the streaming giant publicly released a report on it top titles, unveiling a huge dataset that has encompassed 18,000 titles and nearly 100 billion watch hours.

The What We Watched engagement report covers the number of hours people spent watching all the titles on the platform that were watched for at least 50,000 hours in the first six months of 2023.

Australia’s most watched title on the platform was True Spirit, coming in at number 242 on the list with viewers spending 56.70 million hours watching it between January 1 and January 30.

Considering the film is 1 hour and 49 minutes long, up to 31.21 million people watched the film around the world.

Comedian Celeste Barber’s self-love focused Wellmania came in at number 400, with people spending 41.3 million hours watching the show.

Up to 10.32 million people have watched the show if you take into account the eight 30-minute episodes.

The most popular program on Netflix was the first season of The Night Agent, with 812.10 million hours watched by viewers.

Television is king on the streaming service, the data reveals, with the entire top 10 made up of series like Wednesday, Ginny & Georgia and Queen Charlotte.

In fact, you’ll have to look to spot 14 to find the most popular movie, The Mother starring Jennifer Lopez, which rocked up a total of 249.90 million hours viewed.

A film spin-off of the hit television show, Luther: The Fallen Sun, was the second most watched film with 209.70 million hours.

Netflix will produce a What We Watch report covering the most popular titles every six months from now on, as the company attempts to be “more transparent” in the wake of the U.S. writer and actor strikes that brought the entire industry to a halt earlier this year.

Many had called on the streaming giants to release more information about viewership in an era where shows are often cancelled despite drawing in viewers.

The company says it does not plan to release country or region break downs of data, citing that it would become a “data set for our competitors”.
