As if we needed more proof Kate Winslet is the ultimate acting chameleon.
The award-winning actress transforms once again in her upcoming HBO limited series, The Regime, which will premiere locally on BINGE on March 4.
Viewers were given a taste of what’s to come today with the release of an official teaser trailer and first-look images of the show, which began production in Austria back in February.
In the political drama, Winslet plays the role of The Chancellor, a hard-line dictator of a fictional European country that is on the verge of collapse.
The six-episode series will revolve around an entire year within the walls of the palace, during which The Chancellor meets with an American envoy played by Martha Plimpton who offers her full support, but The Chancellor – who resembles a younger Margaret Thatcher – doesn’t seem to like that very much.
The Regime also stars Matthias Schoenaerts, Andrea Riseborough and Hugh Grant, and is executive produced by Frank Rich and Will Tracy, the creatives behind HBO hit Succession.

This isn’t the first time Winslet has played a leading role in the an HBO series. She previously starred in the American period drama Mildred Pierce in 2011 alongside Aussie actor Guy Pearce.
And in 2021, she starred in Mare of Easttown, playing small town police detective Marianne “Mare” Sheehan who investigates the murder of a teenage mum while trying to keep her own life together – again, starring opposite Pearce.

At the Primetime Emmy Awards in 2021, Winslet took home the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or Movie, beating out the likes of Michaela Coel, Cynthia Erivo, Elizabeth Olsen and Anya Taylor-Joy, all of whom she honoured in her acceptance speech.
“I just want to acknowledge my fellow nominees in this decade that has to be about women having each other’s backs. I support you, I salute you. I’m proud of all of you,” she said on stage.

“Mare of Easttown seems, I don’t know, it is this cultural moment and it brought people together and gave them something to talk about other than a global pandemic and I want to thank everyone for watching our show.
“[Creator] Brad Ingelsby, you created an middle aged, imperfect, flawed mother and you made us all feel validated, quite honestly.”
The Regime premieres Monday, March 4 on BINGE and on Foxtel’s Showcase at 8.30pm and available On Demand.
