Charmed was one of the biggest shows of the late 90s and early 2000s, but it was plagued by rumours of feuds and fights that culminated in its biggest star, Shannen Doherty, leaving at the end of season three.
While the truth behind her exit has been the source of speculation for years, it’s now finally been revealed by Doherty that she didn’t quit; she was fired.
Shockingly, the actress has claimed that it was her co-star, Alyssa Milano, who orchestrated the entire thing.
Doherty and fellow Charmed star Holly Marie Combs opened up about the rumours regarding the show during an episode of Combs’ Let’s Be Clear podcast on Monday.
Combs, who was best friends with Doherty at the time, said she called a meeting with the show’s producer to find out why her co-star had been axed.
She said: “[Jonathan Levin] said, ‘We didn’t mean to – but we’ve been backed into this corner – we’re basically in this position where it’s one or the other. We were told by Alyssa it’s her or Shannen and Alyssa has threatened to sue us for a hostile workplace environment.’”
Combs appeared to hint Milano had built a case against her and Doherty to help her argument and as a result allegedly “documented every time she felt uncomfortable on set”.
Combs said she was baffled because she couldn’t recall any “harsh words” being exchanged or “brawls” happening on-set.
She added tensions between the three stars occurred behind the scenes and was never anything noticed by the crew or special guest stars on-set.
Combs added: “There are actually people who behave badly and get away with it. I don’t think people understand that never happened here.”
Doherty had a “pay or play” contract which meant that if she were fired she could still demand to be paid for the rest of the show’s run despite not being on-screen.
However, Doherty had previously been fired from 90210 and she was advised by her publicists that her career “wouldn’t survive” a second scandal, so she neglected to demand the money she was owed and instead publicly stated she had left of her own accord.
“I lived a year after that sort of replaying everything in my brain and really trying to find those moments (of alleged bad behaviour on set) – and I couldn’t find them,” she said.
“I don’t ever remember being mean to Alyssa on set. I remember an episode I directed where she did something on the Christmas break and they asked me to work around some things with her and I had no problem with it. I couldn’t have been more kind and understanding.”

Doherty went on to insist that she wish she’d fought harder, adding: “I definitely would’ve sued and I would’ve been honest about the situation because the rumours followed me regardless. As you get older, you accept that a situation happened. Acceptance and moving on with your life does not equate to forgiveness. You just learn a lesson and look at somebody differently and move on.”
Doherty was often plagued by rumours of difficult behaviour throughout the early stages of her career. However, despite the rumours, which were often based in the misogyny-ridden narratives in the 90s and 2000s when it came to female stars advocating for themselves, Doherty secretly fought for equal pay for her co-stars after discovered she was the highest paid star.
Her final appearance on the show as Prue came during the season 3 finale, an episode which she directed that’s often cited as the show’s peak. At the time, Doherty, who was excited for the show’s fourth season, had no idea that she was in fact directing the death of her own character.
