Legendary rock star Dave Grohl has been spotted taking time off from his band’s Australian tour to carry out a heartwarming act for those struggling this festive season.
The Foo Fighters are currently touring Australia, and most recently hit the stage in Melbourne twice this week. They’re next set to hit the stage again on Saturday in Sydney, before finishing up in Brisbane on December 12.
Despite their gruelling tour schedule, Grohl took time away from being onstage and surprised volunteers at The Big Umbrella foundation when he rocked up again on Friday morning to work the line.
Despite needing to be in Sydney the following day, Grohl helped hand out the meals at Federation Square for a long shift before he was due to step onto a jet to join his bandmates.
The Big Umbrella is a non-profit organisation set up in 2010 by Justin Dickinson.
Melbourne rock legend Michael Gudinski was known to have worked closely with the organisation, and played a big role in setting up The Big Umbrella kitchen in Brunswick during the pandemic, now dubbed “MG’s Kitchen.”
According to the charity, it has delivered 320,000 meals and “rescued” 492 tonnes of food since its inception over a decade ago.
Meanwhile, The Foo Fighters’ latest performances mark their first Australian tour since the sudden death of bandmate Taylor Hawkins last year.
Frontman Dave Grohl paid tribute to the late drummer at the iconic US band’s show on Monday night, telling the packed crowd every time he sees birds in the sky, he thinks of Hawkins, who died aged 50 in Colombia during the band’s tour of South America in March 2022.
“Every time I see a bird fly by, I think of that guy,” Grohl said, before turning to his bandmates to say he’d spotted birds while performing earlier in the night.

“Either way. I think about him every day. We all do.”
Then, right as Foo Fighters were about to kick off their hit song Aurora – one of Hawkins’ favourite songs – a flock of birds circled above the stadium in a sweet moment that was not lost on Grohl or fans following his heartwarming statement.
