Reason we should be worried about Chris - news.com.au

I don’t want to alarm anyone, but we should all be worried about Chris Hemsworth.

No one panic, nothing too horrible has happened!

I’m not suggesting we all rent a Holden and storm Bryon Bay, pushing women in impossibly long skirts out of the way while calling out his name to do a welfare check.

Chris is fine; I’m pretty sure Matt Damon is still agreeing to visit him in Australia fairly frequently, which seems to be the secret to keeping him happy. But Australia has changed, and it may impact Mr Hemsworth.

You see, there’s been a shift on who we decide are the most important men in Australia. It used to be that if you were blonde, toned and handsome, you were our national obsession.

We had Chris Hemsworth, Simon Baker, Jai Courtney and Sam Worthington. Look, let’s be cheeky and include Kiwi Keith Urban, too.

Yeah, they were all also talented and charming and had that ‘it’ factor that they bang on about on The Voice, but there was clearly a look that gave Aussie men a certain amount of currency.

Effortless masculinity paired with an easygoing charm that would make anyone’s mum blush.

Chris got his start on Home and Away and then became internationally famous by nabbing the lead role in Thor in 2011.

Much like an Olsen twin, he also came into the spotlight armed with a brood of siblings who looked like him – Luke and Liam – who also became famous and with it ‘launched’ the male look that dominated mid-2000s Aussie culture.

Now, that has changed.

Of course, like anything, it’s still changing. There’s a reason Robert Irwin is so popular. He exudes the hot we are used to, but there is progression.

Troye Sivan has won GQ’s Man of the Year Award, while Christian Wilkins has easily been one of the most talked about people of 2023.

Rebel Wilson can complain about having to take a helicopter to work because she’s sick of Rozelle traffic and she’d still get eclipsed by Christian if he wore a fun enough outfit.

Men who deviate from that traditional masculinity are the Aussie men getting the most attention, and celebration. There’s been a shift.

What does this mean for Chris? Well, I don’t think anyone needs to panic too much. He is a multi-millionaire roaming around Byron Bay and still snagging huge movie roles.

I’m not suggesting he’s going to have to start working as a car salesman like a retired rugby player with a concerning history of concussions, but I think, to be dramatic, a new era is upon us.

Yes, there will always be room for Chris or the Chris-type men of the world. We will always find a seat at the table for muscular, tanned men who look like they’d enjoy a meat raffle and could do a great job of carving up a Christmas ham.

Yet I think the table is finally extending; someone’s popped down to Ikea and bought a giant oversized one, and now there’s room in Australia for different types of men to become the ‘it’ boys.

So yes, we should worry about Chris because he is going to have to share the limelight with a whole new era of men, but I reckon Chris will be more than happy to!
