The 2021 Grammy winners list
We’re up to the “tribute to country music” portion of the ceremony
By Robert Moran
I’m sure that’s what we’re all here for, right? At least it’s a tribute to the women of the genre and there’s no one named Morgan in sight.
It starts with a performance from Mickey Guyton, who made history as the first black solo female artist to be nominated in the country category at the Grammys. Even though she didn’t win, the celebration’s significant considering the racial reckoning country music’s faced in recent months.
A few pleasant performances from Miranda Lambert and Maren Morris, the latter with John Mayer face-noodling on guitar, and a few thousand more TVs switch off., I imagine.
Really makes you wish Fiona Apple was here with that promised sledgehammer.
Grammys get a jolt from, ironically, the In Memoriam segment
By Robert Moran
Bruno Mars is doing his best to drag these Grammys from the grave, with a rollicking performance of Little Richard’s Good Golly Miss Molly to launch the In Memoriam segment.
Perhaps in line with the times, this is the longest In Memoriam segment I can remember.
Lionel Ritchie performs Kenny Rogers’ Lady, in an emotional tribute to his friend. Brandi Carlile offers a tribute to John Prine, who claimed two awards earlier today. And Brittany Howard and Coldplay’s Chris Martin collaborate on a soulful rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone.
Harry Styles wins his first Grammy
By Robert Moran
Here’s the manager of LA’s The Troubadour presenting the best pop solo performance prize to Harry Styles for Watermelon Sugar.
He’s still rocking his purple feather boa and calls the honour “f---ing massive”, which I’m surprised isn’t bleeped in this telecast.
I wonder what Zayn’s feeling right now.
Best pop solo performance goes to... Harry Styles
The category: best pop solo performance
The nominees:
Yummy, Justin Bieber
Say So, Doja Cat
Everything I Wanted, Billie Eilish
Don’t Start Now, Dua Lipa
Watermelon Sugar, Harry Styles
Cardigan, Taylor Swift
The winner: Watermelon Sugar, Harry Styles
Taylor Swift brings some much-needed drama
By Robert Moran
She’s dressed as an elvish princess, lying on a mossy cabin roof, performing her record of the year nominee cardigan, august and evermore’s willow alongside her producers Jack Antonoff and The National’s Aaron Dessner.
Like much of the world, I’m enjoying Swifty’s folksy rebrand after so many years of arguing about Kardashians and whatnot. This is the sort of performance that could relaunch Lilith Fair.
Finally, another trophy
By Robert Moran
An hour into this thing and we finally get our second award - best country album.
The Grammys are giving the owners of independent venues across the States the chance to be in on the act, to reflect on the impact COVID’s had on their business, so here’s some ol’-timer from Nashville handing the win to veteran Miranda Lambert’s Wildcard.
She thanks the women of country music, who dominated the category.
Best country album goes to... Miranda Lambert’s Wildcard
The category: best country album
The nominees:
Lady Like, Ingrid Andress
Your Life Is a Record, Brandy Clark
Wildcard, Miranda Lambert
Nightfall, Little Big Town
Never Will, Ashley McBryde
The winner: Wildcard, Miranda Lambert
Nailed it!

Let’s all take a moment for the manicures on some of the stars, including Billie Eilish, who performed in the opening segment, Megan Thee Stallion and Noah Cyrus.
Seriously, get to the awards already
By Robert Moran
The live performances keep coming. This time it’s El Malo Conejo (that’s Bad Bunny for all you gringos), followed by Dua Lipa with a medley of sorts.
Their lacklustre energies are proving the gamble Grammys producers took with this performance-heavy telecast - it’s all been a bit safe and muted so far. Noah’s claim that the awards are a celebration of live shows after a year of shutdowns is noted, but this is hardly convincing me to leave my couch.
Where are the big sets and productions, the crazy ad-libs and pop star personas? At least Dua Lipa fit in multiple costume changes and some choreographed moves that got me thinking of young Britney - a timely tribute - but is it enough? I think tomorrow’s ratings might say no.
All the looks from the red carpet
The Grammy Awards have always been about big and bright looks, and this year delivered that in spades. Scroll to see a few highlights from fashion editor Melissa Singer, then check the rest here.
