Hamilton Musical Sydney opening night: Glam Gladys shines on red carpet - NEWS.com.au

Sure, rock star Keith Urban and pop icon Delta Goodrem wowed the fans at the opening night of hit musical Hamilton in Sydney tonight.

But it was New South Premier Gladys Berejiklian who turned heads.

Fresh from dealing with the ongoing pandemic and a one-in-100 year rain event, the Premier glammed up for the red carpet looking super chic in a black ruffled top, burgundy velvet skirt teamed with a black Gucci bag.

“I’m so excited for Sydney and Australia, this is an amazing night,” she told reporters.

TV’s Jessica Rowe was also in attendance. She was all smiles after that nasty car fire – the road incident pushed to one side.

She joined the big names at Sydney’s Star casino for the opening night of Hamilton, held at the venue's Lyric Theatre.

It’s the first Australian staging of the musical phenomenon. The show has had a record box office, an impressive award hauls and glowing praise from fans including President Barack Obama.

But the pandemic shuttered all performances worldwide. Sydney will be the only Hamilton production being staged anywhere in the world with New York City’s famous Broadway precinct and London’s West End all closed due to the COVID pandemic.

It’s the story of American founding fathers Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr, dynamically told through a smash-up of musical genres both traditional and contemporary.

It was something a reunion for The Project. Current hosts Lisa Wilkinson and Waleed Aly headed in, the latter with wife Susan Carland, while former host Hamish Macdonald was there with partner Jacob Fitzroy. The Macdonald-Fitzroys very sweetly tightly held hands as they strolled up the carpet.

For Australian audiences, it’s an opportunity to see Hamilton’s local cast, culturally diverse performers drawn from all over Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, led by WA actor Jason Arrow who is taking on the title role of Alexander Hamilton.

Keith Urban was one of the first to stroll up the red carpet, also sporting the all black theme.

ABC newsreader Jeremy Fernandez bought an elegance to the event pairing the classic bow tie and black slacks with an electric blue crushed velvet jacket. Very dapper chapper.

Delta Goodrem dazzled against the golden backdrop in a black and white number.

Landing the show is a win for Sydney. Traditionally, Melbourne has snagged most of the big name theatrical productions including, recently, Come From Away and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

The NSW Government is hoping Hamilton will put Sydney back o the map post -pandemic.

Hamilton is now showing at the Sydney Lyric Theatre.
