OK, give Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B all the awards

By Robert Moran

It promised to be the wildest moment of the ceremony, and it delivered.

Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B’s performance of WAP came with a disclaimer from Trevor Noah: “If you have any small children in the room, just tell them it’s a song that’s about giving a bath to a cat.”

I tried, but once Megan started twerking onstage and Cardi B started working a stripper pole, my four-year-old wasn’t buying it. But he was dancing nevertheless.

“Tonight is my first night at the Grammys, but it’s not my first time entertaining you,” Megan told us. For bringing some joy and much-needed attitude to this awkward Grammys experiment, her and Cardi deserve all the awards.

“Wow! Wow! Wow!” is all Trevor Noah can muster.

A surprise win for H.E.R

Her? Yes, H.E.R.

So obviously my “clear-cut” prediction was wrong. The win goes to H.E.R’s I Can’t Breathe, who seems just as surprised by the decision. She says she recorded the song in her bedroom at her mum’s place, and her dad cried when he heard it.

“Remember we are the change we wish to see,” she says, urging everyone to keep the energy from last June’s #BlackLivesMatter protests.

It’s been impressive to see H.E.R’s transition from elusive pop wannabe to vital artist. She used to refuse to show her face in performances, to now making work that’s so personally revealing. In any case, this throws another wrinkle into the night’s other top categories.

Will Beyonce break a Grammys record today?

By Martin Boulton

Nominated in nine categories this year, Beyonce could equal Alison Krauss’ 27 Grammy wins and go beyond, potentially becoming the greatest female Grammy winner of all time.

As of today, Beyonce has collected 26 Grammy wins across her career, and with nine nominations could even have surpassed the late Georg Solti, the Hungarian-born British orchestral and operatic conductor, who collected 31 Grammy Awards in his lifetime. Also ahead of Beyonce in the record books is Quincy Jones, who has had 28 wins in his career.

Beyonce has already set a Guinness World Record today alongside Megan Thee Stallion, with the pair becoming the first female artists to ever win the best rap performance category with their song Savage.

Beyonce is still up for record of the year, among other awards, giving her a good chance of setting some Grammys records of her own today.

Let’s talk about the major categories: Song of the year

By Robert Moran

Because it’s up next. Song of the year is the songwriters’ award.

I’m not sure if the abundant octogenarians (allegedly) who are in charge of selecting Grammy winners can get behind a defiant Taylor Swift lyric like “I knew everything when I was young!“, but I can and I also love cardigan metaphors. This one feels pretty clear-cut. Let’s see...

We’re up to the “tribute to country music” portion of the ceremony

By Robert Moran

I’m sure that’s what we’re all here for, right? At least it’s a tribute to the women of the genre and there’s no one named Morgan in sight.

It starts with a performance from Mickey Guyton, who made history as the first black solo female artist to be nominated in the country category at the Grammys. Even though she didn’t win, the celebration’s significant considering the racial reckoning country music’s faced in recent months.

A few pleasant performances from Miranda Lambert and Maren Morris, the latter with John Mayer face-noodling on guitar, and a few thousand more TVs switch off., I imagine.

Really makes you wish Fiona Apple was here with that promised sledgehammer.

Grammys get a jolt from, ironically, the In Memoriam segment

By Robert Moran

Bruno Mars is doing his best to drag these Grammys from the grave, with a rollicking performance of Little Richard’s Good Golly Miss Molly to launch the In Memoriam segment.

Perhaps in line with the times, this is the longest In Memoriam segment I can remember.

Lionel Ritchie performs Kenny Rogers’ Lady, in an emotional tribute to his friend. Brandi Carlile offers a tribute to John Prine, who claimed two awards earlier today. And Brittany Howard and Coldplay’s Chris Martin collaborate on a soulful rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone.

Harry Styles wins his first Grammy

By Robert Moran

Here’s the manager of LA’s The Troubadour presenting the best pop solo performance prize to Harry Styles for Watermelon Sugar.

He’s still rocking his purple feather boa and calls the honour “f---ing massive”, which I’m surprised isn’t bleeped in this telecast.

I wonder what Zayn’s feeling right now.

Taylor Swift brings some much-needed drama

By Robert Moran

She’s dressed as an elvish princess, lying on a mossy cabin roof, performing her record of the year nominee cardigan, august and evermore’s willow alongside her producers Jack Antonoff and The National’s Aaron Dessner.

Like much of the world, I’m enjoying Swifty’s folksy rebrand after so many years of arguing about Kardashians and whatnot. This is the sort of performance that could relaunch Lilith Fair.
