Minchin ‘sick’ over getting ‘cancelled’ - news.com.au

Musician and actor Tim Minchin has expressed his disappointment over being “cancelled” for something he claims to have “never said”.

The star reportedly weighed into the controversy over a pro-Palestine protest at Sydney Theatre Company, calling out people who live in “leftie bubbles” and have a misguided view of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Last month, three cast members in a Sydney Theatre Company (STC) production wore Palestinian scarfs, known as keffiyehs, on stage as they took a curtain call.

It was an unauthorised act, and sparked controversy amid the ongoing Hamas-Israel conflict, leading to foundation members Judi Hausmann and Alex Schuman quitting their positions.

Minchin reportedly weighed in on the controversy at his concert at Llewellyn Hall in Canberra on Monday evening as he continues his sell-out tour of Australia, according to the Australian Financial Review.

He reportedly asked that attendees keep his comments private because he “didn’t want any news reports”.

One fan at the show claimed that Minchin remarked the three actors who donned keffiyehs last month “probably did not understand the offence caused to Jewish attendees”.

It’s also alleged the star shared his frustration with people “living in leftie bubbles” before hitting out at the media for its simplistic takes on the Israel-Palestine conflict.

At the end of his concert, Minchin reportedly said: “I am going to sing a Jewish man’s song” before performing a cover of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah.

He has performed the song throughout the tour, plunging the audience into darkness while they sing along with him.

Following the reports, Minchin took to Instagram to hit back and claim that he’s been “cancelled” for things he didn’t actually say before adding a throwing up emoji to the post.

The STC issued an apology following the incident last month after it faced criticism from the Jewish community.

The actors who wore the keffiyehs were Harry Greenwood – who is the son of actor Hugo Weaving – Mabel Li and Megan Wilding.

In a statement released on November 29th, the STC said it was “deeply sorry” for the hurt the curtain call, and its immediate actions, had caused.

“We acknowledge that this is a difficult and frightening time for people in our community and around the world,” it said in a statement.

“We understand the actions at the curtain call and our immediate response has hurt many in our community. For this, we are deeply sorry.”

Meanwhile, Minchin tragically recently lost his mother.

Audience members at Minchin’s show in Sydney last month were left in tears as the performer made the sad personal announcement.

“My mum died yesterday,” Minchin said, as gasps were heard around the theatre. He explained that he felt compelled to go ahead with the show despite the family tragedy, and then launched into a heartbreaking version of one of his most popular songs, White Wine in the Sun.

Minchin’s voice then faltered momentarily as he sang the lyrics: “I’ll be seeing my dad, my brother and sisters, my gran and my mum … they’ll be drinking white wine in the sun.”

The star, whose mum had been diagnosed with blood cancer in 2020, is currently touring his An Unfunny Evening with Tim Minchin and his Piano around Australia and receiving rave reviews.
