Meghan Markle's struggles with the British Royal Family began well before her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry, according to a new book about the couple.
In Finding Freedom: Harry And Meghan And The Making Of A Modern Royal Family due out on August 12, authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand claim the Duchess of Sussex was warned over a personalised necklace she was pictured wearing while dating Harry.
It was as early as December 2016 when Meghan was still living in Canada and filming her hit TV show Suits that she was photographed wearing a £164 (AUD $296) 14-carat gold necklace with the initials 'H' and 'M' on it.
The public considered this confirmation the couple were dating, as suspected, and Meghan was pursued by paparazzi keen to capture a snap of her wearing it.
Scobie and Durand say palace officials weren't as impressed, calling Meghan and suggesting that by wearing the necklace she "only served to encourage the photographers to keep pursing such images".
They claim that Meghan was frustrated and emotional after the call.

In her mind, her boyfriend's office had called to tell her what kind of jewellery she should wear.
This may have been the first time Meghan began to comprehend what she was getting into. Marrying into the British Royal Family was always going to be challenging for an outsider.
For someone used to navigating her own path, it may have marred what was arguably the happiest time of her life thus far.
Excerpts of the book have been published in The Times and give an intimate insight into the couple's struggles as senior members of the British Royal Family and despite claims to the contrary, a spokesperson for the couple told PA news agency they were not interviewed for the book.
They said: "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were not interviewed and did not contribute to Finding Freedom. This book is based on the authors' own experiences as members of the royal press corps and their own independent reporting."
They haven't denied, however, giving permission for those close to them to cooperate with the book.
