Iconic television personality Regis Philbin has died at the age of 88.
The longtime television host died on July 24 of “natural causes”, according to a statement from his family.
“We are deeply saddened to share that our beloved Regis Philbin passed away last night of natural causes, one month shy of his 89th birthday,” his family shared in an exclusive statement with PEOPLE.
“His family and friends are forever grateful for the time we got to spend with him – for his warmth, his legendary sense of humour, and his singular ability to make every day into something worth talking about. We thank his fans and admirers for their incredible support over his 60-year career and ask for privacy as we mourn his loss.”
In 1988, Philbin became the host of Live! with Regis and Kathie Lee which saw him become a household name. In 2001, the show became Live! with Regis and Kelly, co-starring Kelly Ripa.
Mr Philbin, who won six Daytime Emmy Awards, left the show in 211 after 33 memorable years on air and was replaced by former football player Michael Strahan.
His death has been mourned by celebrities and colleagues around the world, saying they are “heartbroken” by the news.
“The end of an era. A great friend and mentor. I will never forget your generosity of spirit sweet Regis,” actress and host Lisa Rinna posted on Twitter.
“Regis was a great broadcaster, a good friend and a tremendous amount of fun,” comedian and TV host Jimmy Kimmel posted.
“He leaves behind a beautiful family and a TV legacy that will likely go unmatched. Regis, I hope our friend Rickles met you at the Pearly Gates with open arms and a slew of the insults you loved so much.”
