Marty Sheargold, the star of Nova’s Kate, Tim and Marty drive show has today announced he’s leaving the program to focus on his standup career.
It comes after a decade with the network, having joined the station in 2010 as part of the Meshel, Tim & Marty breakfast show on Brisbane’s Nova 106.9.
The beloved stand-up comedian and regular on Ten’s Have You Been Paying Attention? has been with Kate Ritchie and Tim Blackwell on drive since January 2014.
“Over the last four or five months I’ve been tossing up what I’d like to do in 2021, and what I’ve decided to do is leave the show,” Sheargold said Friday afternoon.
“Kate, Tim and Marty will no longer feature Marty at the end of the day.”
He went on to say he felt he’s “outgrown” the program, adding that his recent return to stand-up sparked inspiration to push himself further.
“I’ve been thinking about it for a while. I’ve spoken to numerous people and I’ve decided now is the time to stretch the legs a little,” he said.
“Going out and doing the standup got me thinking whether I’m challenging myself in life ... I’ve been sitting in a comfortable chair for a long time,” he said, adding: “I feel like I’ve aged out of this show … Sometimes you gotta know in your gut when it’s time to go.”
“It’s been a wonderful 10 years with the network,” he said.
Ritchie and Blackwell have been hosting the show from Nova 96.9’s Sydney studio, while Sheargold hosts the show from Nova 100’s Melbourne studio.
Sheargold was one of Australia’s top stand-up comedians before he quit performing more than 15 years ago. Last year, he staged a comeback with a series of sold out shows around the country.
Nova’s chief programming & marketing officer, Paul Jackson, said of the shock announcement in a statement today: “Marty has had a fantastic 10-year career with Nova, initially in Brisbane breakfast and then as part of the iconic Kate, Tim & Marty drive show.
“We would like to thank him for his contribution to the network, the laughs and great radio moments, and wish him well for the future. We look forward to announcing who will be joining Kate and Tim in drive in the coming weeks.”
In the same statement, Marty thanked his co-hosts for their support, adding that “it feels like the right time” for him to challenge himself professional.
Marty will be replaced after eight more weeks on air, the host said today.
