Peter Green, the co-founder and original guitarist of Fleetwood Mac, has died at the age of 73.
Green died “peacefully in his sleep”, according to a statement released on Saturday.
He was influential in the band’s early days, however his career with the band was shortened because of mental illness.
Lawyers acting on behalf of Green’s family said that while a “further statement will be provided in the coming days,” those close to the iconic Blues guitarist share “great sadness” over his passing.
Peter Green was barely out of his teens when he got his first big break in 1966, replacing Eric Clapton in John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers.
But a year later he would break away to create his own, soon-to-be iconic band.
Green formed Fleetwood Mac with drummer Mick Fleetwood, which debuted at the British Blues and Jazz festival in1967.
They managed to score a record contract at the festival, leading to an eponymous first album in February 1968.
Green wrote Albatross, which remains the band’s only number one hit.
He left the band in 1970 and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.
Green was known as a generous guy; he tried to persuade other band members to give their earnings to charities, believing they had too much money to ever spend.
His own band members were also in awe of his generosity. In 2017, Mick Fleetwood explained in an interview Green’s selfless reasons for naming the band.
“Peter was asked why did he call the band Fleetwood Mac,” Fleetwood said
“He said: ‘Well, you know I thought maybe I’d move on at some point and I wanted Mick and John (McVie) to have a band.’ End of story, explaining how generous he was.”
