A former Australian Idol judge has been called in to help on The Voice.
With coaches Kelly Rowland and Boy George unable to return to Australia due to COVID-19, the Channel 9 show asked Idol alumni Marcia Hines to help mentor some of the artists.
News.com.au spoke to Leigh Aramberri, executive producer on The Voice at ITV, about how the show was forced to adapt after the coronavirus hit.
HOW WAS THE SHOW FORCED TO CHANGE?
We had filmed half of the season and were a good way through editing those episodes when COVID-19 hit, and we knew having seen the content that not only was it worth keeping on screen for our cast and crew but that it was a chance to keep music and entertainment on television at a time when people need something to escape to.
We needed to adapt and adapt quickly to find a way to play out the rest of the show under whatever restrictions we continue to all face. We came up with multiple versions of the show and conversations changed daily based on how things were looking at that moment and what we essentially were predicting may or may not happen.
It was certainly the greatest challenge I have faced in my time working on the show.

WHAT OTHER OPTIONS WERE CONTEMPLATED?
Along with Guy and Delta who were already home in Sydney, George and Kelly were adamant that they would do whatever they could safely to continue their roles coaching their teams and supporting the show.
We have managed to work out a way for Kelly and George to mentor remotely via FaceTime and they will both be sitting in their red chairs via satellite.
We are fortunate that some Australian music industry greats have also come together to help Kelly and George bring home the show by stepping in and co-mentoring for their teams. This will mean not only will the artists have their Coach beamed into the room, but they will have the additional support of a local mentor.
For the playoffs rounds we are thrilled to have The Veronicas and someone who is no novice when it comes to a show like ours, Marcia Hines, joining Kelly and George.
Following this, more well-known and incredibly talented Aussie musicians will lend Kelly and George a helping hand right through to the finish line.
WERE THERE ANY TECH ISSUES WITH THE NEW SYSTEM?
You are always nervous about any new technology being introduced but we were very fortunate that we have a great team who came together and worked through any of the technical challenges in advance. Thanks to FaceTime and Satellite technology, we were able to make it feel like Kelly and George were in the room.
DOES IT PUT KELLY/GEORGE’S TEAM MEMBERS AT A DISADVANTAGE HAVING THEM OVERSEAS?
Knowing how dedicated they are to their teams meant they were on board for anything we or their artists needed from them. All four coaches are present at off-camera rehearsals that don’t get seen on the show in addition to what you do see and George and Kelly have been on FaceTime for all of these. Its uncanny how much it just feels like they are in the room for us and for them.

KELLY AND GUY HAVE CLASHED A BIT THIS SEASON — COULD THIS NEW SYSTEM SIMMER DOWN TENSIONS?
The coaches are always passionate about their teams so I don’t think even an ocean between them all could dilute that passion. I think sometimes it’s easier to say what you really think when you aren’t faced with sitting next to someone physically so I’m sure there is more of that to come, but the great thing is that it always comes from a place of respect and everything is always left in the red chairs.
