Bachelor in Paradise: Channel 10 show glamorises alcohol consumption, researcher says - NEWS.com.au

A popular Australian reality television series has been lashed for glamorising risky behaviour to its predominantly young viewers.

Researchers from the University of Adelaide conducted an in-depth study of the show Bachelor in Paradise, which returns for a new season tonight, and found alarming patterns.

Each episode on the first season of the show was divided into one-minute intervals and then depictions of alcohol consumption were documented, lead researcher Dr Jacqueline Bowden explains.

“Alcohol was shown or referenced in more than 70 per cent of those one-minute intervals across each of the show’s 16-episode series,” Dr Bowden said.

“We weren’t shocked that drinking is shown but the fact it was so widespread in this program is concerning and sends the wrong message to young people and the community about drinking.”

The very first depiction of alcohol in each episode of the dating show occurred in the first or second one-minute intervals, she added.

Actual alcohol use occurred in 31.9 per cent of the intervals, implied alcohol use was in 63.4 per cent and other alcohol references happened in 14 per cent.

The sheer prevalence of booze and boozing in Bachelor in Paradise could give the impression that drinking is more prevalent in society than it really is, Dr Bowden believes.

“In terms of alcohol use, this ‘reality’ show doesn’t match reality and there are unintended consequences to that,” she said.

On average, the first season of the show attracted 47,000 viewers in the six to 17 age bracket and 81,000 viewers aged 18 to 24.

“Producers of shows like this should be aware they are glamorising drinking for young people,” Dr Bowden said.

“Higher exposure to traditional forms of alcohol marketing among young people is associated with increased alcohol uptake, increased consumption and increased bingeing and hazardous drinking levels.

“This is also likely to be the case for reality TV shows.”

Globally, alcohol consumption is the leading cause of death and disability in people aged 15 to 24 and hospital emergency department presentations in this age group in Australia are on the rise.

Harmful alcohol consumption costs the Australian economy $36 billion a year and causes an estimated 5500 deaths.

“The results of this study support calls for a regulatory regime by government that protects young people more effectively from exposure to alcohol, capturing both traditional forms like advertising and also non-traditional forms like in TV and movies,” Dr Bowden said.

A spokesperson for Channel 10 said: “Responsible Service of Alcohol guidelines are observed at all times during filming of Bachelor In Paradise and alcohol consumption is closely monitored by staff.”

The show is a spin-off of the popular Bachelor franchise and is shot on location in Fiji.
