Production of the film that Alec Baldwin was producing and starring in when he fatally shot a cinematographer with a prop gun last week has been officially suspended, in what has been described as "a pause rather than an end".
Key points:
- Production of the film, Rust, has been halted and an internal safety review is under way
- In an email to crew workers, the movie's production team said "our hearts are broken"
- The film's cinematographer was fatally shot with with a prop gun last Thursday
It came almost a week after Baldwin fired a prop gun, killing 42-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
The movie's production team confirmed in an email to crew workers that work on the film, a Western titled Rust, had been suspended at least until the investigation was complete.
The team said it was working with law enforcement officials, conducting its own internal safety review and offering grief counselling.
Baldwin careful with guns, affidavit says
According to court documents, Baldwin was explaining how he was going to draw the revolver from his holster and where his arm would be positioned in the moments before the shooting.
The actor had been told the gun was safe to use for the rehearsal of a scene, in which he was to pull out the weapon while sitting in a church pew and point it at the camera.
The camera was not rolling when the gun went off and killed Hutchins.
Camera operator Reid Russell said Baldwin was safe when using firearms on set.
Russell said, in a previous instance, Baldwin made sure a child actor was not near him when a gun was being discharged.
Camera operator shortage amid strike
Statements by director Joel Souza, who was standing behind Hutchins and was injured in the shooting, were also part of an affidavit released on Sunday.
It detailed the turmoil on the set on the day of the shooting.
Several crew members walked off the production in a dispute over pay and accommodation, Russell said, and he was left with a lot of work to do.
According to Russell, only one camera was available to use, and it had to be moved because the light had shifted, causing a shadow.
Souza said he was focused on how the scene would appear on camera.
After a lunch break, Souza said he was not sure if the gun had been checked again.
Baldwin, who is known for his roles on 30 Rock and Saturday Night Live, has described the killing as a "tragic accident".
