Why did Queen Elizabeth go to hospital? Here's what we know about the monarch's health - ABC News

The Queen recently proclaimed you're "as old as you feel", but a number of reports about her health recently suggest doctors are advising caution for the 95-year-old monarch.

Before being admitted to hospital this week she had reportedly been advised to cut back on drinking, had cancelled a trip and had been seen using a walking stick for the first time in years.

She's now back at Windsor Castle and able to undertake light duties, but here's what we know about the Queen Elizabeth's health.

Is Queen Elizabeth healthy?

The Queen has generally enjoyed good health in her 95 years, though royal officials have been loathe to discuss health issues in general, saying medical matters are private.

Her hospitalisation this week is believed to be the first time she has stayed overnight in hospital since 2013, when she was suffering symptoms of gastroenteritis.

She had successful surgery to treat an eye cataract in 2018.

Earlier this month she was out in public using a walking stick.

It was the first time she had been seen using a walking aid since she had knee surgery nearly 20 years ago.

Pictures of her using the walking stick circulated at the same time Vanity Fair reported doctors had advised her to forego the consumption of alcohol, citing her advancing years.

Then, Buckingham Palace announced she had to "reluctantly" cancel a planned trip to Northern Ireland on medical advice.

Why did the Queen go to hospital?

Much of the language used by Buckingham Palace to describe the Queen's condition was vague, with the Palace issuing a statement saying she went to King Edward VII hospital in London for "preliminary investigations".

"The Queen attended hospital on Wednesday afternoon for some preliminary investigations, returning to Windsor Castle at lunchtime today [Thursday], and remains in good spirits."

A royal source told Reuters the Queen had stayed at the hospital for practical reasons and that her medical team had taken a cautious approach.

The only firm information on the cause of her stay was that it was not COVID-related.

For her part, the Queen has suggested she remains young at heart.

Earlier this week she declined the honour of "Oldie of the Year" from UK magazine The Oldie.

"Her Majesty believes you are as old as you feel, as such The Queen does not believe she meets the relevant criteria to be able to accept, and hopes you will find a more worthy recipient," her assistant private secretary wrote.

Her husband Prince Philip was hospitalised for weeks earlier this year, before his death aged 99 in April.
