Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin is looking to "take some time for himself" after an on-set accident killed a crew member and injured a director.
Alec Baldwin was "hysterical and absolutely inconsolable for hours" after he discharged a prop firearm on the set of his film, Rust, accidentally killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.
The actor, 63, is looking "to take some time to himself and re-centre himself" following the fatal incident on Thursday.
"This was pretty devastating," a source told PEOPLE.
"This is how he handles difficult times. Whenever something bad happens, in the short term, he removes himself from [the] public eye."
The source told PEOPLE Baldwin was "hysterical and absolutely inconsolable for hours".
"Everyone knows this was an accident, but he's absolutely devastated."
A photo taken after the fatal accident shows the distraught actor hunching down in the parking lot outside the Santa Fe County Sheriff's office.
No charges have been filed, according to a news release sent by the sheriff's office later on Thursday evening.
Baldwin expressed his grief in a series of tweets on Friday.
"There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours," he said.
"I'm fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred and I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family.
"My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna."
