Winners of the inaugural event included a food waste hub in Milan and the nation of Costa Rica, which is pioneering a project to pay people to restore natural ecosystems.

Among the judges were Sir David Attenborough, Cate Blanchett and singer Shakira.

In a pre-recorded short video played to the crowd, William said: “We are alive in the most consequential time in human history.”

“The actions we choose or choose not to take in the next 10 years will determine the fate of the planet for the next 1000,” he said.

“Many of the answers are already out there,” he added. “But we need everyone, from all parts of society. to raise their ambition and unite in repairing our planet.”

The ceremony comes days ahead of the COP26 UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, which begins on October 31.
