Comedian and The Project panellist Nazeem Hussain said his father died from Covid-19, as he revealed why he chose to keep it secret.
Australian comedian Nazeem Hussain has revealed his father died from Covid-19.
The 36-year-old, who regularly appears as a panellist on Channel 10’s The Project, spoke with Australian actress Amy Ruffle on her podcast Mind Time today, where he said his dad died from the virus two months ago.
The Victorian-based performer said he’d kept the family tragedy under wraps so as not to politicise it, as he discussed his mental health struggle amid the pandemic.
“I’ve felt the weight of a deteriorating mental health. A death in the family, I guess the duration of lockdown and kind of having to trudge through that. It just starts to get to you at a point,” he said on the podcast, which is produced by It’s All Her.
“Probably since my father’s passing, just hearing and seeing people talk about vaccination and just the small things we miss out on as a result of lockdown, and making this whole pandemic about the individual as opposed to it being about the community or a greater good … Those things have started to get to me much more than they ever have.
“I’m not normally the sort of person that feels confrontational, but I’ve felt more confrontational online than I’ve ever felt before. I haven’t acted on those impulses, but I’ve definitely felt rage towards comments online saying irresponsible things.
“People have the strongest of opinions about Covid and they’re not always selfless, they’re very ugly, some people deny the existence of it.
“It’s quite triggering to have to constantly think about the passing of someone near and dear to me.”
It is understood Hussain’s father was living in Sri Lanka.
Hussain is considered one of the country’s most popular comedians, having quit his job as a tax consultant in 2013 to produce his first TV show Legally Brown for SBS.
The show well and truly put Hussain on the map, receiving widespread critical acclaim before it was nominated for Most Outstanding Comedy at the 2015 Logie Awards.
He then went on to star in Channel 7’s Orange Is The New Brown, before later landing his own Netflix special, Nazeem Hussain: Public Frenemy, in 2019.
