But a very public and humiliating betrayal dashed all hopes of a reconciliation between the royal sisters-in-law.
Royal biographer Andrew Morton has released an updated edition of his book Meghan: A Hollywood Princess in which he delves into the infamous feud.
Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, were initially close friends, joining their respective princes Harry and William at royal engagements and jointly championing charitable causes.
They group was dubbed the Fab Four by the press and it seemed like a new power era was dawning.
But in the lead-up to Meghan and Harry’s star-studded wedding at Windsor Castle, a fight over bridesmaid dresses sparked the beginning of the end.

An unfashionable row
What’s known for certain is that an argument occurred during a dress fitting before Meghan and Harry’s wedding.
It was initially reported that Kate was left in tears after a disagreement – either over Princess Charlotte wearing tights or an ill-fitting bridesmaid dress.
But in her spectacular tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey, alongside Harry, Meghan revealed it was in fact Kate who made her cry.
“No, no, the reverse happened,” Meghan clarified.
“I don’t say that to be disparaging to anyone. She was upset about something, she owned it, she brought me flowers and brought a note apologising.
“She did what I would do if I hurt someone.”
The confrontation “really hurt my feelings” and was a “turning point” in their relationship, Meghan told the television host.
Adding to the bitter fallout was the apparent refusal of Kensington Palace to clarify the incorrect reporting that Meghan had sparked the brawl.
“I don’t think it’s fair to her to get into the details of that because she apologised and I’ve forgiven her. What was hard to get over was being blamed for something not only I did not do, but that happened to me.”
The temporary peace offering
In his book, Morton reveals that Meghan attempted to mend the frosty relations after her wedding by giving Kate “an elegant peace offering”.
“The spat concerning the bridesmaids‘ outfits now behind them, Meghan had since given Kate and her six closest friends gold bracelets designed by Californian jeweller Lisette Polny as a thank you for their help and support,” he writes.
“It was an elegant peace offering, both women professional enough to know that there was no gain in showing dissent or disdain.”
And peace might’ve been temporarily declared.
But senior members of the Royal Family, including Prince Charles, were left furious over Harry’s handling of his and Meghan’s departure.
The couple stepped back as working royals and left the United Kingdom for Canada, before relocating to Los Angeles where they now live with son Archie and daughter Lilibet.
Prince William was also said to be furious with the timing of the announcement and a lack of collaboration with the Palace.
Any hope of a reconciliation between the estranged siblings and their wives was dashed after the Oprah interview.
Accusations of racist comments, Meghan being refused treatment for a serious mental health issue and candid revelations about the extent of strained relations between Harry and his family delivered a serious blow.
It has been claimed that Prince William vetoed a plan for Princess Lilibet to be Christened in the UK at Windsor Castle, which would have seen the entire Sussex clan reunite with the Royal Family.
Harry returned to the UK for Prince Philip’s funeral earlier this year, and again for the unveiling of a statue in honour of his late mother Princess Diana.
Meghan remained at home on both occasions.
