Netflix hikes subscription fees for Australian users - 9News

Some Australian Netflix users can expect the cost of their subscription to rise after the streaming platform announced it will be increasing prices on several of its plans.

From today (November 11), Netflix's standard plan will move from $15.99 to $16.99 a month, while the premium plan will jump $3 from $19.99 to $22.99.

Netflix's basic plan will remain at its current price of $10.99.

New members who sign up today will see the new prices, while the update to subscription costs will roll out to existing members in the coming weeks.

Current subscribers will be notified by email and in the Netflix app 30 days before the new prices will apply to them.

The exact timing of the price change will depend on the subscriber's billing cycle, with all members expected to be on the updated schedule over "the next few months".

In a statement, a spokesperson for Netflix told 9News.com.au the rise in subscription prices will be used to invest in more content.

"We know Australians have never had more choices when it comes to entertainment, and we're more committed than ever to delivering an experience that exceeds their expectations," the spokesperson said.

"Members tell us how much they value the breadth and variety of catalogue, and we're updating our prices so that we can continue to invest in more shows and films.

"As always, there'll be different plans so that people can pick a price that works for their budget."

The last time Netflix changed subscription prices in Australia was in September 2020, when the prices for the platform's basic and standard plans were raised.

The premium plan has not increased in price for Australian subscribers in two years.

Netflix offers tiered subscription services that restrict — or enhance — the number of screens or devices it can be simultaneously used on.

Both the standard and premium plans also offer high-definition content, while the entire catalogue of content in its standard resolution is available on the $10.99 a month basic plan.
