Emma Watson has broken her almost year-long social media silence to address rumours about her relationship status and acting retirement.
In the last few months, Watson appeared to retreat from acting and the public eye altogether, with her Instagram page bio reading: “Emma’s official Instagram page is currently dormant and is not being updated.”
Further to that, her agent told the Daily Mail in February that Watson was “not taking on new commitments”, with the publication claiming she was engaged to her boyfriend, Leo Robinton.
But now the Harry Potter star, 31, has addressed the speculation herself.
“Dear Fans, Rumours about whether I’m engaged or not, or whether my career is ‘dormant or not’ are ways to create clicks each time they are revealed to be true or untrue,” she tweeted to her 30 million followers.
“If I have news – I promise I’ll share it with you,” Watson added.

Watson reassured her followers she wasn’t going anywhere, but was enjoying some quiet time during the COVID pandemic.
“In the meantime please assume no news from me just means I’m quietly spending the pandemic the way most people are – failing to make sourdough bread (!), caring for my loved ones and doing my best not to spread a virus that is still affecting so many people,” she said.
“I am sending so much love to you, hoping you’re OK and as well and happy as you can be in these strange times. And again, thank you to everyone working so hard to keep us safe and well.”
It was reported Watson was taking a break from acting back in February when her own agent said her career was “dormant” and that she wouldn’t be taking on any new projects, following her last film credit in 2019 in Little Women.

After the news spread like wildfire, Watson’s agent clarified, “Emma’s social media accounts are dormant but her career isn’t.”
Around the same time it was reported Watson had secretly moved to Ibiza with Robinton – her boyfriend of two years – and that they were engaged and wanting to start a family.

Despite her high profile, Watson has always tried to keep her private life private, but that hasn’t stopped her from being hounded by the British press.
On her 18th birthday, Watson was photographed by paparazzi who were trying to take pictures up her skirt.
She has also had to deal with numerous stalking threats.

As a result of the public interest, Watson has never discussed her romantic relationships.
“I can’t talk about my boyfriend in an interview and then expect people not to take paparazzi pictures of me walking around outside my home. You can’t have it both ways,” she told Vanity Fair in 2017.
