Bert Newton is officially on the mend.
The 82-year-old Australian TV legend’s wife Patti has shared an image of her beloved “Moonface” on Instagram this afternoon — the first since he was forced to have his leg amputated to save his life.
“I wanted to show you Bert’s doing ok, still flirting with the nurses and having a laugh. Spending time with his darling Lola. And taking a day at a time. A long journey but he’s blessed with so much love,” she wrote.
A frail-looking Newton is pictured sitting in a wheelchair, his beaming granddaughter Lola beside him.
While not looking as moonfaced as his namesake suggests — appearing to have lost weight during what can only be imagined to be a very trying time — Newton’s megawatt smile is as bright as ever, grinning at the camera from ear-to-ear.
The share has generated more than 4000 likes and a flurry of well-wishers sending their love in the three hours since it was posted.
“That’s the only Moon I needed to see this week! Much love to you both,” wrote one, referring to last night’s super blood moon.
“Great to see he’s doing ok. He’s a trooper!” wrote another, while Patti’s comment about Bert’s flirtations were not lost on another who wrote: “That’s wonderful news. Big cuddles to the ‘Flirty Berty’ love conquers all.”
The quadruple Logie winner was forced to have his leg amputated earlier this month after a rampant toe infection put his life in danger.
The shock news came after the icon had already spent six weeks being treated in Epworth Hospital for the infection.
Doctors told Newton’s family he may not survive unless he agreed to have his leg surgically removed.
Newton’s wife of almost 50 years Patti is understood to have supported his decision to go ahead and is by his side.
It appears love does conquer all.
