Kendall Jenner has celebrated the launch of her tequila brand with a star-studded bash, despite an ongoing cultural appropriation controversy.
Katy Perry, Hailey Bieber, Tyler The Creator and Chris Brown joined Jenner and a slew of other celebrity guests in Los Angeles over the weekend to play drinking games and taste test the supermodel’s latest business venture — tequila brand 818.
But sisterKim Kardashianwas quick to work the room, gathering testimonials to publish to her 222 million Instagram followers supporting Jenner’s venture, just days after Jenner was accused of appropriating Mexican culture in a series of adverts released for the label.
Kardashian shared a video of Perry staring down the camera as she raised a shot glass, saying “here's to female entrepreneurship”.
“818 means a good time and its the best tequila I’ve ever had,” Bieber added.
The controversial advert saw the 25-year-old on horseback and also posing on the back of a pick up truck in worn jeans, a cowboy hat and a loose cotton shirt with braids — a look some commentators called “migrant chic”.
“Not Kendall Jenner making a tequila brand, girl go make an egg nog company or whatever the white people created,” one user wrote.
“Kendall Jenner, is this ‘Mexican aesthetic’ or ‘Mexican cultural appropriation aesthetic?’ cause I’m not getting it,” Mafer Romero wrote.
“I am literally begging Latinx tequila drinkers to NOT buy the Kendall Jenner tequila. Please instead consider buying La Gritona. Melly Barajas Cardenas is one of the few female Master Tequila distillers, whose staff is mostly women!!!!!” one user wrote.
