Prince Harry has released an extraordinary statement after a damning report found Princess Diana was duped into giving her bombshell Panorama interview in 1995.
The Duke of Sussex, 36, declared “our mother lost her life because of this, and nothing has changed” after a six month inquiry confirmed journalist BBC Martin Bashir commissioned fake bank statements and used “deceitful behaviour” to get the interview with Diana.
The interview sent shockwaves through the royal family and around the world at the time, as Diana opened up about her failed marriage to Prince Charles and his affair with Camilla Parker Bowles.
“Our mother was an incredible woman who dedicated her life to service. She was resilient, brave, and unquestionably honest,” Harry said in a statement.
“The ripple effect of a culture of exploitation and unethical practices ultimately took her life.
“To those who have taken some form of accountability, thank you for owning it. That is the first step towards justice and truth.
“Yet what deeply concerns me is that practice like these – and even worse – are still widespread today.
“Then, and now, it’s bigger than one outlet, one network, or one publication.”
He added: “Our mother lost her life because of this, and nothing has changed.
“By protecting her legacy, we protect everyone, and uphold the dignity with which she lived her life.
“Let’s remember who she was and what she stood for.”

Prince William releases emotional statement
The Duke of Cambridge has released his own video statement, saying the BBC’s deceit “substantially influenced what my mother said” and “played on her fears and fuelled paranoia”.
“The interview was a major contribution to making my parents relationship worse, and has since hurt countless others,” Prince William said in a video message posted to Twitter.
“It brings indescribable sadness to know that the BBC’s failures contributed significantly to her fear, paranoia and isolation that I remember from those final years with her.
“But what saddens me the most is that if the BBC had properly investigated the complaints and concerns first raised in 1995, my mother would’ve known that she’d been deceived.”

Martin Bashir apologises but is still ‘proud’ of interview
Bashir, 58, has apologised for the deceit following former Supreme Court judge Lord Dyson’s findings today, saying he “deeply regrets it”.
“This is the second time that I have willingly fully co-operated with an investigation into events more than 25 years ago,” Bashir said.
“I apologised then, and I do so again now, over the fact that I asked for bank statements to be mocked up. It was a stupid thing to do and was an action I deeply regret.
“But I absolutely stand by the evidence I gave a quarter of a century ago, and again more recently.
“I also reiterate that the bank statements had no bearing whatsoever on the personal choice by Princess Diana to take part in the interview.”
He added: “It is saddening that this single issue has been allowed to overshadow the princess’ brave decision to tell her story, to courageously talk through the difficulties she faced, and, to help address the silence and stigma that surrounded mental health issues all those years ago.
“She led the way in addressing so many of these issues and that’s why I will always remain immensely proud of that interview.”
The scathing report said the BBC “fell short of the high standards of integrity and transparency which are its hallmark”.

Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, has told previously how Bashir used forged bank statements to convince the princess to do the interview.
He said the papers wrongly showed two senior courtiers were being paid by the security services for information on his sister.
The false documents were also said to give the impression associates of the royal family were selling stories to newspapers.
Mr Spencer said if he hadn’t seen the forged documents he would not have introduced Diana to Bashir and the interview would have never happened.
Diana died in a car accident in Paris in August 1997 when her driver was attempting to flee paparazzi.
