Vivid Festival announces enormous Australian line-up for 2021 - ABC News

Dozens of unmissable shows and parties make Sydney the only place for music lovers this August

Like so many other events, Sydney's Vivid Festival was cancelled in 2020.

This year, they make up for lost time by programming one of the most impressive Australian line-ups that fans of high quality, cutting edge music are likely to see.

The bill is a daunting series of highlights, with artists across genres getting in on what is truly a celebration of the most exciting artists around right now.

Here are just a few highlights to begin with:

  • A five-night residency from prolific rock monsters King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard
  • The world premiere of Sampa The Great's An Afro Future show
  • The debut of a new supergroup, Springtime, featuring Gareth Liddiard, Jim White and Chris Abrahams
  • The return of revered NYC/Australian noiseniks Liars
  • A solo piano performance from the great Angie McMahon
  • Huge line-ups like Golden Features and Hermitude, Briggs and Friends and more
  • The annual lighting of the sails, with a soundtrack by Electric Fields

The Sydney Opera House is again the home of Vivid LIVE, which will host a large amount of the music on offer this year.

The iconic sails of the Opera House will be lit up with a new digital artwork called Yarrkalpa – Hunting Ground, created by the Martu Artists and Sydney-based Curiious. Accompanying the lighting of the sails will be a soundtrack by the brilliant Electric Fields and Martu Artists.

We're not even close to finished.

Over at Carriageworks, the party continues with some of the country's best getting set to make plenty of glorious noise.

Amyl & the Sniffers will bring their incendiary show back to Sydney for the first time in far too long.

Two of the best rappers in the country also set up shop at Carriageworks: Jesswar will smash through two shows at the venue, proving why she's always been held in such high regard and why she's only gonna get bigger.

The following night, Malyangapa, Barkindji rapper Barkaa will show why everyone reckons she's one of the most powerful new voices in this country's scene.

That venue will also host the Open Frame event, which will feature a line-up of artists who explore the boundaries between sound, noise and experimental music.

As if that's not enough, two of the country's best up and comers, Kee'ahn and Babitha, will perform a special show together at the City Recital Hall.
