Things are getting harder by the minute in the kitchen.
During Tuesday night’s episode of MasterChef Australia, contestant Eric finds himself in huge trouble when he thinks he has misread the recipe.
The episode has four contestants, Sabina, Eric, Brent and Scott, who lost yesterday’s invention test, fighting for their spot in the competition.
The judges tease that the challenge is a MasterChef first, introducing guest chef Clinton McIver from Amaru with his delicious dish in hand.
After the dish, aged lamb with flowering legumes, is revealed the contestants are shocked to find only a black blindfold hiding underneath. They will be cooking the dish today completely sight unseen, only tasting the dish with their blindfolds on. The cooks will not see the challenge dish until they present theirs to the judges.

After committing the taste of the unseen dish to memory, with their fingers mapping it all out, the cooks have two hours and forty-five minutes to use all their other senses – which a great chef must have in order to be top of their game – to replicate the taste and appearance of Clinton’s dish or risk being eliminated.
Unfortunately for Eric, he starts to struggle when he notices he’s made an error.

“I think I have misread the recipe,” he tells judge Jock Zonfrillo and Clinton.
“Was I supposed to have left the skin on?” he asks, realising he took the skin and fat off the lamb piece he’s cooking.
“When you weighed the lamb, do you remember having any fat or skin on the lamb?” asks Clinton.
“I felt it was really crispy and caramelised,” Eric says, completely doubting himself.
The chef, unable to give much away, asks Eric why he thinks that was, but Eric is frazzled and doesn’t remember.
“Cooking the lamb without fat, it’s not going to provide the beautiful caramelised edge like on Clinton’s original dish,” Eric tells the camera.
Noticing his stress, Jock jumps in with some advice.

“Hey Eric, look at me,” he starts. “There’s two ways this cook can go for you now. You can either fall apart, or you’ll collect yourself and just keep pushing forward through the recipe.”
“I am just freaking out, but I promised myself at the beginning of the day that no matter what happened I wouldn’t give up,” Eric continues to tell the camera.
“I’ve sacrificed a lot to do this kind of pivot in my life. I have been studying medicine for three years. I missed my final clinical exam, but food has just always been my passion so I’ve made a mistake, but I’m not going to let that send me home.”
That’s the spirit.
To see how Eric handles this monumental error, tune into MasterChef at 7:30pm on Channel 10.
