It’s the biggest question in Australian radio: Who will replace Eddie McGuire on Triple M next year?

It was announced last week that Triple M’s Hot Breakfast, co-hosted by McGuire and Luke Darcy, wouldn’t be returning to Melbourne radio in 2021.

That announcement set off a guessing game about who would fill the void, with industry insiders predicting Marty Sheargold will be part of a new Triple M breakfast show next year.

Sheargold quit his role on Nova’s national drive show Kate, Tim and Marty on September 11 and hasn’t yet revealed his plans for next year.

Yesterday, McGuire was a guest on Nova’s new-look drive show, Kate (Ritchie), Tim (Blackwell) and Joel (Creasey), and he was grilled about the Sheargold rumour.

“I’ve heard he’s cut my lunch, is that right?” McGuire joked.

“Don’t pretend you don’t know what’s going on,” Ritchie said.

“I can tell you, Kate, I deliberately don’t want to know,” McGuire replied. “I said (to Triple M), ‘I don’t want to know about this for exactly this reason. I don’t want it coming out from me so don’t tell me. I don’t want even a hint. And I’m not interested, good luck, and I’ll hang up the microphone next Friday and whoever comes in next I’ll wish them luck.’”

McGuire said that he had heard a rumour that Sheargold “might end up on 2Day FM breakfast” in Sydney next year.

But news.com.au understands the new 2Day FM breakfast show will be hosted by Dave Hughes, Ed Kavalee and Erin Molan in 2021.

Speculation that Sheargold is headed to Triple M intensified when Radio Today revealed that his long-time Nova associate producer, Loren Barry, is also leaving Nova to work for Southern Cross Austereo (which owns Triple M) next year.
