Well-wishes have been pouring in for Home and Away star Johnny Ruffo, who announced on Tuesday that his brain cancer has returned.
The singer, actor and TV presenter took to Instagram to share the devastating news, saying he was determined to beat “this s*** disease.”
Ruffo, 32, was first diagnosed with brain cancer in 2017 when it was revealed he had undergone surgery to remove a tumour after suffering from migraine.
In May last year, he declared that he was currently “clear of cancer,” but sadly the hiatus was not to last for long.
“After an unexpected week of seizures and excruciating headaches it is with a heavy heart that I have to let you know I now have another huge battle ahead of me as my brain cancer has returned, though I will dig deep and beat this s*** disease again,” he wrote in his Tuesday Instagram post.
“Yes you will. All my love to you Johnny,” fellow Home and Away star Georgie Parker quickly responded.
And she wasn’t the only celebrity friend to rally around the star.
“See you tomorrow my strong, sassy, politically incorrect warrior friend,” another Home and Away star Lynne McGranger added.
Musical mentor Guy Sebastian said the news was “unbelievably unfair.”
“You are such a light to us all,” he wrote.
“Your positivity and courage is seriously inspiring. Love ya.”
‘Johnny Ruffo strong’
“There is strong, then there is Johnny Ruffo strong,” Larry Emdur said.
“It’s like a superhuman strength, and it can beat any s*** that gets in its way ... good luck man, stay strong.”
“We’re here for you brother and sending all the love and good vibes,” pop duo Jess & Matt wrote.
“You’re a warrior.”
“We’re all here for you buddy. Sending love,” radio presenter Michael “Wippa” Wipfli added.
Perth-born Ruffo rose to prominence after he came third in the 2011 version of X Factor Australia (Reece Maston won).
He signed to Sony and released a series of chart-topping singles before appearing as Chris Harrington in Home and Away from 2013 to 2016.
He also appeared on Dancing with the Stars and performed with the likes of One Direction, Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block.
Then, in 2017, came the cancer diagnosis. Last year he released a song called “Broken Glass,” which reflected on his health battles.
“This song is probably the most vulnerable song I’ve written,” he told The Morning Show at the time.
“It’s very personal for me.
“It’s loosely based on my experiences in the past two or three years - and about being down and out - not necessarily (just) about cancer, but about anything like depression or losing a loved one.
“I really want people to connect with it and interpret it their own way, because everyone goes through struggles.”
Ruffo chronicled his first battle with brain cancer on social media, showing his fans and followers the progress he made with updates on his scans and results.
“Some things in life really put things into perspective, hoping for a positive result, keep me in your thoughts,” he wrote on Instagram following his first operation.
All along, Ruffo has sung the praises of his partner Tahnee Sims, who’s been there every step of the way.
On her birthday in 2019, Ruffo took to Instagram to describe his girlfriend as “the most incredibly kind, loving, caring, and beautiful person in the world.”
“You make me want to be a better person or at least try,” he wrote.
“Each day with you is just a little better than the previous one and I am so blessed to be able to call you mine, all the love in the world, I love you more and more each day.”
