SAS Australia: Celebrities begging Seven for spot on season two - NEWS.com.au

Channel 7 has been inundated with approaches from celebrities who are desperate to appear on SAS Australia next year.

The first season of the brutal reality show finished last night with Merrick Watts, Nick Cummins and Sabrina Frederick passing selection. James Magnussen made it to the end of the course but wasn’t given a passing grade.

The second season of the show is set to start filming in late Autumn/early Winter and will air in the second half of 2021.

“We have been inundated with Aussie celebs wanting to take part and there are some good surprises on the shortlist,” a Seven spokesperson told news.com.au.

SAS Australia producers are already deep into the casting process for next year, the spokesperson said.

“Names will be locked off sooner than later as people need to train hard to be ready for this course,” they told news.com.au.

“Once cast they are given a training program. Ideally they need at least three months to get SAS ‘fit’ in a physical sense, but getting into the right mindset is up to the individual.”

The show is incredibly physically and mentally draining with a number of celebs getting injured in season one.

The most serious injury was sustained by Cummins who suffered a nasty cut to his leg.

“The gash to Nick’s leg was pretty damn impressive,” chief medical adviser Dr Sam Hay told New Idea. “It was down to the bone, and he was millimetres away from a catastrophic injury. But a dozen stitches and daily dressings ensured he kept soldiering on.”

Watts cracked two ribs and former Biggest Loser trainer Shannan Ponton got hypothermia twice.

Despite the risk of injury, SAS Australia has proven to be a good opportunity for celebrities to show another side of their personalities.

Cummins has been able to regain some credibility after his disastrous appearance on The Bachelor. Convicted drug smuggler Schapelle Corby endeared herself to viewers before she quit the show, and AFL star Sabrina Frederick has gone from a virtual unknown to a national star.

On the flip side, actor Firass Dirani’s appearance on the show may have damaged his career.

The former House Husbands star raised the ire of his co-stars on numerous occasions when he broke the instructors’ rules and they were all punished as a result.

Industry site TV Blackbox wrote in October that Dirani’s behaviour on the show “has killed his TV career”.

“As an actor in shows like Underbelly and House Husbands Firass has become a household favourite,” TV Blackbox’s Rob McKnight wrote. “But as an actor he can hide behind a character. Now that he’s appearing in a reality TV show the audience are judging the man himself — and they don’t like what they see.

“TV executives will be taking note. Dirani is now a liability,” McKnight wrote.
