Taylor Swift has delighted Swifties yet to see the Eras Tour by confirming she will continue to switch up her “surprise songs”, so she can play what she wants when she feels like it.
The 34-year-old made the announcement during the final show of her Melbourne leg on Sunday, in which she declared the Victorian city was “the love of my life”.
The Love Story hitmaker’s mammoth three-hour show features two songs from her discography that are typically not part of her regular set list.
During her three concerts at the MCG – which were the largest crowds the 14-time Grammy winner has ever played for – Swift stunned fans by choosing crowd-favourite tunes and mashups which span her decades-long career for the surprise section.
“I want to be as creative as possible with the acoustic (surprise) set moving forward and I don’t want to limit anything or say, ‘Oh, if I played this song, I can’t play it again’,” she told the audience on Sunday night.
“So, from now on, I don’t want to take any paint colours out of the paint box (or) tools out of the toolbox.
“I want to be able to play songs more than once if I feel like it and I want to be able to make changes to songs. Does that sound OK?”
On Saturday night, one of Swift’s surprise songs was a mashup of three tracks, Getaway Car, The Other Side of the Door and August, with the latter already part of the Eras Tour setlist.
The shock combination of songs sent fans in the stadium into a frenzy and international Swifties green with envy.
“WHAT POSSESSED HER TO DO THIS?” one fan said on X, formerly Twitter.
“Does Taylor owe Australia money or something wtf is this,” vented another.
A third wrote: "Why does Melbourne get 9 surprise songs in 3 nights".
The Anti-Hero singer on Sunday night heaped praise on the thousands of fans who attended her three MCG shows.
“Some stadium girl math for you … 96,000 people the first night, 96,000 people the second night. 96,000 people tonight,” she said.
“Those are all the biggest shows I've ever played on a tour and you did it three times.
“The math is that it’s 288,000 people in three nights, Melbourne. You are the love of my life.”
Swift’s Eras Tour kicked off in Glendale, Arizona in March 2023, with the singer-songwriter setting a rule for herself that she would choose two new surprise songs each night and never repeat them.
But a month later at her April gig in Tampa, Florida Swift told concertgoers she would reperform tracks from Midnights in the acoustic set, given the 2022 album was her latest release (excluding rerecorded albums).
“Basically when I started the tour, I was like, ‘In the acoustic section, I am never repeating a song. I’m never doing songs more than once.’ But now I’m like, ‘There are so many songs I want to do more than once,’” Swift told Tampa Bay’s Raymond James Stadium.
She added: “So, I’m making a little caveat to the rule, which is that if (a song) is on Midnights, I can do it however many times I want, because Midnights is the most accurate picture of my life to date.”
And then, during her Sao Paulo show in November, the You Belong With Me hitmaker confirmed she would reset the secret songs section for her 2024 concerts to the joy of her fans.
Swift, who on Monday thanked Melbourne fans on Instagram, has four days off before she takes the stage at Accor Stadium in Sydney on Friday night.
She will play four back-to-back shows in the Harbour City, with Monday evening’s gig to conclude the Australian leg of the Eras Tour.
